Edmunds wins sectional golf qualifier

As if an undefeated season and Section III Class B title were not enough, the Skaneateles boys golf team seized another honor.

Eric Edmunds, with two solid rounds at Colgate University’s Seven Oaks course, won the state qualifying tournament on Memorial Day weekend and will lead a nine-man team into this weekend’s state tournament at Cornell University’s course in Ithaca.

Through the opening round on Thursday, Edmunds shared fourth place, with an 81, as Jeff Baldetti was tied for eighth with an 83.

However, Edmunds put together an 18-hole total of 76 on Saturday to surpass everyone. At 157, he beat Jamesville-DeWitt’s Eric Davis by one shot and another J-D golfer, Jake Merola, by two shots.

Baldetti, meanwhile, shot another 83 and, at 166, missed the qualification by a single shot to finish 10th alone.

Edmunds, Davis, Merola, Tyler Dattmore (East Syracuse-Minoa), Eamon Dempsey (Rome Free Academy), Derek Bard (New Hartford), Drew Laemmermann (Watertown), John Downey (Alexandria Bay) and Travis Basciotta (Oriskany) comprise the team for the state tournament.
