Marcellus, as the proud hosts, came within inches of winning last Tuesday night’s OHSL Liberty division boys track and field championship meet.
Yet it was Skaneateles coming out on top, earning 109.5 points as the Westhill Warriors got 106 points and the Mustangs 104 points to finish third.
Marcellus had its top runners earn a long series of wins, as Chris Stogsdill pulled off a rare triple, plus helped in a relay.
Stogsdill tore through 800 meters in 1:56.93, with Jesse Garn third in 2:01.58, and he also set a meet record in the mile as he won in 4:22.43. Then Stogsdill went to the 3,000-meter steeplechase and set a second meet record, blazing to a time of 9:40.33, more than half a minute ahead of the field.
As if that wasn’t enough, Stogsdill teamed with Garn, Tom Riccardi and Sean Dunn for a victory in the 4×800 relay with a time of 8:22.22.
Mike Quercia took the 100-meter dash in 11.34 seconds, and he set a league meet record when he ran the 400-meter dash in 48.37 seconds and also won the high jump, clearing 5 feet 10 inches. Sam Schneider was fourth in the 100 as Nick Huss took second in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet 6 inches.
Garn went on to another third-place finish in the 3,200-meter run in 9:59.06. Keith Shields (16.74 seconds) and Paul Kelly (16.87 second) took third and fifth, respectively, in the 110 high hurdles, with Kelly sixth in the 400 hurdles.
Marcellus finished with 32 points in the girls OHSL Liberty meet.
Megan Tock finished second in the high jump, clearing 4 feet 10 inches. Kim Duck was fourth in the triple jump, going 30 feet 8 3/4 inches. Elizabeth Dean was fifth in the 1,500 (5:09.31), with Laura Quercia fifth in the 400 and Bailie Vensel fifth in the 3,000.
