F-M girls golfers get revenge on Auburn

Of all the wins the Fayetteville-Manlius girls golf team had accumulated in recent years, few had to feel more satisfying than last Monday’s 193-204 victory over Auburn.

For one thing, the Maroons had beaten the Hornets earlier this season at Cavalry Creek, the team’s first defeat since 2006. Also, this rematch was on Auburn’s home course at Lakeview Country Club, adding to the difficulty.

Despite the unfamliar territory, and despite tough scoring conditions (fast greens, cold temperatures, lots of wind), F-M would give a championship effort.

Alex Seabury shot 41 for nine holes, beating Auburn’s Meg Cahill by three shots. Cahill’s teammate, Larissa Carter (45), finished third, but the Hornets would prove to have more depth.

Briana Winslow, shooting a 48, led the next wave, as Maria Mintskovsky and Sara Simons matched each other with 52. Abby Boduch had a 58, with Carly Kidd adding a 59.

The Hornets still have matches this week against Central Square, Nottingham and Utica Proctor before next Thursday’s Section III championship at Rogues Roost West, where F-M and Auburn might have a third showdown.
