Caz girls lacrosse beats Homer, J-E

In the lead-up to a big game against Westhill early this week at the Fenner Street complex, the Cazenovia girls lacrosse tried to gain some necessary momentum.

That would mean winning Thursday night’s battle with Jordan-Elbridge, and with a strong second half, the Lakers got away to beat the Eagles 15-9.

Even though it had a majority of the scoring chances, Cazenovia (12-3) could not solve J-E on a consistent basis in the first half, only leading 7-5 as they went to the break.

Slowly, the Lakers’ speed and skill won out. Kassie Kleine, taking a larger role in the offense, matched Kara Cannizzaro with four goals, adding an assist. Cannizzaro had two assists.

Just behind them, Gabby Jaquith scored three times, while Julie Gregg earned two goals and two assists and Colleen Dougherty also found the net twice. Lindsey Nourse joined Jaquith with one assist. Ella Thorpe led J-E with three goals and two assists.

Two nights earlier, the Lakers went to Homer and had little trouble finding the net in the first half of an 18-7 romp over the Trojans.

Before it reached the break, Cazenovia had 14 goals, a torrid pace that took Homer out of the argument before it could even start.

Cannizzaro worked her way to five goals and four assists. Gabby Jaquith returned from a one-game absence to score four times, adding an assist, as Kassie Kleine got three goals and Katie Kleine joined Lauren Machoose with two goals apiece. Kendra Volz and Kaitlyn Button also scored as Lindsey Nourse picked up three assists.

Both the Westhill game, and Friday’s trip to Marcellus (with a rematch against J-E in between), will help determine where the Lakers end up seeded for what promises to be a ferociously competitive Section III Class C tournament.
