Boys track Lakers edged by Westhill

Even with success in the sprints and field events, the Skaneateles boys track and field team fell just short of snatching the OHSL Liberty division regular-season title from Westhill.

By a narrow 71.5-69.5 margin, the Warriors denied the Lakers a three-way tie for the regular-season title that it would have shared with Solvay, who beat Skaneateles 79-62 in the three-way contest at Earl Hadley Stadium.

Despite this, Pat Rooney and Brae Kriever both emerged with two wins and a second out of this highly competitive meet.

Rooney continued to dominate the 400-meter hurdles, his time of 57.7 seconds well clear of Westhill’s Dymytry Mazuryk (59.3 seconds). In the triple jump, Rooney flew 40 feet 10 inches, and he also finished second (16.5 seconds) to teammate Sean Cooper (15.2 seconds) in the 110-meter high hurdles.

As for Kriever, he got ahead of everyone in the 100-meter dash, winning in 11.1 seconds, before unleashing a top long jump of 19 feet 3 1/2 inches. Going for a third win in the 400-meter dash, Kriever (52.3 seconds) finished just behind Solvay’s Jeremy Parker (51.9 seconds), who also won the 200.

Drake Hill gave the Lakers a win in the shot put, tossing it 47 feet 4 inches, not far from the school record (47 feet 9 inches) he set six days earlier. Calvin Davis ran a close second (2:02.1) to Westhill’s Chris Moore (2:01.5) in the 800-meter run, and was third (4:35.2) in the mile.

Skaneateles got a second chance at both Westhill and Solvay this week during the OHSL Liberty division championship meet at Marcellus.
