At some unforeseen point, the Liverpool girls lacrosse team had to hope that things would turn around — or at least better luck would arrive. The Warriors had to endure yet another close defeat last Tuesday night at Solvay, going to overtime but falling to Fayetteville-Manlius 16-14. Liverpool played just the first half it needed to against the always-tough Hornets, working its way to a 9-6 halftime advantage. F-M battled back, even going in front late in the second half, only to see the Warriors get back even on Jennifer VanderMeulen’s fifth goal with 25 seconds left in regulation. However, the Hornets had the last move in OT, with goals that negated the work of Mikey Meagher, who had 22 saves in the net. Sarah Lux led the Hornets with five goals (a career high) and two assists. For her part, VanderMeulen had three assists to go with her five goals. Kathleen Conese found the net four times, while Alison Flood scored twice. Marybeth Madia and Kristina Lombard each got one goal and one assist, as Brianna Mancini got the other goal. The Warriors then hosted state Class A no. 1-ranked Baldwinsville on Friday night, staying close for a while before taking an 18-11 loss to the Bees. Madia, who finished with five goals, and VanderMeulen, who had four goals and two assists, led the way as Liverpool controlled the pace of the first half and only trailed by two, 7-5, at the break. B’ville would gradually pull away, though, as Quincey Spagnoletti torched them for seven goals and one assist, with Katie VanDeValk and Mackenzie Kjerstad each scoring three times. As for the Warriors, only Conese and Nina Tassone (each with one goal and one assist) helped out Madia and VanderMeulen. Meagher finished with 15 saves. Liverpool got a second shot at F-M and Cicero-North Syracuse this week, trying to improve upon a 2-7 mark.
