Back home from its successful spring-break work in South Carolina, the Liverpool baseball team aimed to keep on winning. A key element of that return was the way the Warriors played in back-to-back weekend games against Corcoran and Rome Free Academy, both of which would prove to be successful as it improved its record to 8-2. First, Liverpool hosted the Cougars and, in a much-anticipated battle of top pitchers, came out on top by a score of 5-1. Matt O’Kipney only allowed three hits in a complete-game effort, producing six strikeouts as he kept Corcoran off the board until the sixth inning. By then, Liverpool had a 4-0 lead, as it got to Corcoran ace Steve Boronczyk for 10 overall hits and runs in the second, third and fifth innings. Andrew Schreyeck doubled twice, with Dan Cerniglia earning two RBIs and David Piraino also driving in a run. From there, the Warriors went to DeLutis Field Saturday to face RFA — and it proved to be a successful trip as it beat the Black Knights 7-5. Liverpool got three runs off RFA pitcher Mark Capponi in the first inning, which set a positive tone. Just as important, though, were the three runs the Warriors got in the top of the fifth that made it 6-1, a deficit the Black Knights could not overcome despite a late rally. Piraino had two RBIs as part of Liverpool’s 14-hit attack. Tom Everson, Mike Weakley and Shawn Peake drove in one run apiece. Joe Riley pitched and got the win, with Vince Valentino and Cory Folk both working in relief. In its first game back last Tuesday afternoon at Fayetteville-Manlius, the Warriors used steady offensive production to build the foundation for an 8-5 victory over the Hornets. Liverpool got to F-M pitcher Joe Sinopoli for three runs in the first two innings, then scored three more times in the top of the fourth to grab a 6-0 lead. Everson led that charge, doubling twice and earning three RBIs. Piraino also got two doubles, with Peake adding a solo home run. F-M charged late, preventing Liverpool pitcher Pat Brown from a complete game, but Weakley replaced Brown in the seventh inning and got the save.
