With every single point proving to be important, the West Genesee girls track and field team went to the final race to pull out last Wednesday’s CNY Counties League National division meet at Utica Proctor, edging past the Raiders 69-68.
Proctor had lost in a similar manner to Cicero-North Syracuse the week before, leading most of the way before the 4×400 relay turned things around at the end.
Here, the exact same thing happened. WG’s 4×400 quartet of Kristin Waters, Katie Bott, Colleen Smith and Brianna McGraw had to win — and did so, posting a time of 4:20.5 that the Raiders could not match.
Already, Graham had won twice on the oval, taking the 1,500-meter run in 5:14 and adding an 800-meter victory in 2:31. Abby Kastick won the 3,000-meter run in 12 minutes flat as Bott needed 1:09.1 to win the 400-meter hurdles.
WG swept the relay events. Waters, Smith, Graham and Katie Riley prevailed in the 4×800 (11:35) before McGraw, Jamy Bliss, Paige Copeland and Ali Rachubka got together and won the 4×100 in 53.7 seconds.
In field events, Alicia Andrianos helped WG by winning the discus, tossing it 102 feet 2 inches. Proctor star Geannitta McClain earned three wins, taking the 100-meter dash (12.3 seconds), 200-meter dash (26.6 seconds) and long jump (16 feet 9 inches).
Back home in Camillus, WG won on the boys side, too, but by a more comfortable margin as it beat Proctor 81.5-59.5.
Zac Karpinski set a tone by taking both the 100 (11.0 seconds) and 200 (23.2 seconds), and also helped Greg Kurtz, Christos Dimkos and Jeremy Jones tear through the 4×100 in 43.4 seconds.
Steve Houghmaster ran a brisk mile in 4:42.9, then earned a second victory in the 800 in 2:02.6 as Jon Richardson claimed the 400 hurdles in 1:00.5. Ethan Wojcik, Ron Ta, Andrew Incaudo and Billy Gabriel won the 4×800 in 8:40.3.
Jones returned in the long jump, going 20 feet 5 inches to prevail there. Ian Dardani cleared 8 feet 6 inches and took first place in the long jump as Ben Zachariah threw the shot put 42 feet 3 1/2 inches and won, too.
In Bishop Ludden’s three-way meet against Port Byron and Pulaski, Sean Curry won the mile, posting a time of 4:38.2 as teammate Nick Barletta won the 3,200-meter run in 10:49 flat.
