The East Syracuse-Minoa girls lacrosse team zoomed to the top of the OHSL Freedom division with a string of victories that improved its overall record to 5-2.
It started on April 9, at home against Mexico, as the Spartans ripped the Tigers 15-6. ESM steadily worked its way to a 9-3 halftime edge, then kept pulling further away.
Allyson Rossi matched Mexico all by herself with six goals. Gina Campese and Carissa Ficarro each had two goals and two assists, while Alyssa Anderalli also found the net twice. Marlee Vlassis gained one goal and one assist, with Leah Sweeney and Liz Stratton also scoring and Lauren Greiner gaining an assist, too.
ESM’s week of spring break commenced last Tuesday with a 14-0 shutout of Whitesboro. The Spartans maintained the shutout as a point of pride after racing through a 10-0 first half that decided matters early.
Again, Rossi led the way, with four goals and two assists. Vlassis and Stratton followed with two goals apiece, while Ficarro picked up a goal and three assists. Alayna Davis, Amber Corey, Rachel Kolod, Leah Sweeney and Catherine Ruszczyk took turns getting one goal apiece.
Though the defense gave up some goals in last Friday’s game at New Hartford, it didn’t matter much, as ESM won the battle of Spartan teams 16-6.
In a steady effort where ESM scored eight times in each half, Campese led with four goals as Ficarro produced two goals and four assists, with Rossi adding three goals and two assists.
Vlassis and Anderalli joined Ficarro in the two-goal column, with Davis, Greiner and Stratton each getting single tallies. Corey added an assist as goalie Katie Cook recorded seven saves.
ESM would get a road test Monday, at Cortland, then come back home Thursday to face Fulton.
