Warming up in chilly conditions, the Liverpool girls track and field team nearly beat the whole field at last Saturday’s season-opening Cicero-North Syracuse Relays.
On the same Bragman Stadium where state championships will be decided two months from now, the Warriors picked up 49 points, beaten only by the host Northstars, who prevailed with 63 points.
Three times, the Warriors had runner-up efforts, including the 4×800 relay, where Hannah Anthes, Rachel Putman, Megan Murphy and Melissa Riehl posted a time of 10:50.61. CNS won in 10:33.19.
In the distance medley relay, Brigid Heenan, Miranda McConnell, Trina Bills and Chrissy Scalisi combined to finish second in 13:28.20, as CBA (12:49.53) claimed the top spot.
Meagan Turner and Harmony Cross helped Liverpool tie for second in the high jump with clearances adding up to 9 feet 4 inches. Cross and Nachez Brown got third in the 100 hurdles (35.04 seconds), while Bills and Heenan helped the mile relay team claim third place in 23:17.92.
Cross and Cara Scalisi earned third place (64 feet 11 inches) in the triple jump, as the Warriors took fourth in the shot put and fifth in the 400 hurdles and sprint medley relays.
Liverpool got 30 points for sixth place in the boys meet, prevailing in the sprint medley, where Corey Bundrage, Zavon Watkins, Colin Savage and Dion Dyer posted a time of 3:43.83 to beat the field by nearly four seconds.
Savage (4:31.78) and Alex Wilke (4:34.16) had the fastest times in the mile as they teamed with Anthony Brais and Nick Hull for second place. Bundrage and Joe Spernyak were third in the 110 high hurdles (32.59 seconds) as Watkins, Justin Albro, Chris Clemons and Frank Johnson took third in the 4×400 relay in 3:42.69.
