With a first-half offensive eruption, the Marcellus girls lacrosse team easily sailed through last Monday’s trip to Homer, eventually beating the Trojans 20-6. Marcellus set a scary pace, scoring close to every time it had possession in the first half and dominating the draws to set up those goals. That added up to a 13-4 halftime advantage, something that kept building in the soggy conditions. Denise Johns, with three goals and three assists, anchored the assault, as Kate Gosson and Meghan Connors both scored four times. Nora Barry and Erin Walter each had two goals and one assist, with Leea Sinay also finding the net twice. Kelly Welch, Kelly Hennigan and Suzanne Swierczek earned single goals. Given no time to rest, the Mustangs turned around and faced Jordan-Elbridge and, in the snow, handled the Eagles 13-6. For a half, both teams adjusted to the wintry conditions, and J-E stayed within close range, only trailing 5-3 at the break. However, Marcellus found its rhythm in the second half, splitting the offensive duties well. Connors had four goals as Barry and Gosson each scored three times. Sinay again had two goals, with Stephanie O’Rourke also scoring. Ella Thorpe picked up two goals for the Eagles as Mallory Snyder, Chelsea Maitland, Carrie Farrugia and Amanda Wheeler each had one goal. Emily Dillon gained two assists, with Hanne Bailey and Emily Bates each getting one assist. Kelsey Richardson worked in the goal, recording 14 saves. This came on the heels of J-E’s 15-10 loss to Westhill, played 24 hours earlier. Here, the Eagles found a lot of offensive success in the late going, but only after Westhill had raced out to a 10-3 halftime advantage. Bailey picked up a three-goal hat trick, while Dillon and Kate Dungey each scored twice. Farrugia, Thorpe and Sam Davis got one goal apiece. Annie O’Connor (five goals, one assist) and Sam Marshall (three goals, one assist) led Westhill’s winning effort. As Marcellus stays home this week for games against Westhill and Onondaga, the Eagles are off until April 20, when Skaneateles pays a visit.
