Thanks to strong pitching, the Chittenango baseball team found its second visit to Oswego County to be quite different from the first one. In stark contrast to the 13 runs Mexico put on them a week earlier, the Bears used high-quality pitching to subdue Phoenix last Thursday in a narrow 1-0 decision. When Jon Stevens doubled home a run off Firebirds pitcher Drew Compeau in the top of the first inning, he had no idea that it would be the only time either side would cross the plate. That’s because Stevens, combining with Kevin Streeter, kept Phoenix cold all afternoon, giving up just three hits between them. Meanwhile, Chittenango’s defense overcame a pair of errors to make the plays it needed to preserve that 1-0 margin. If the weather holds, the Bears will face New Hartford early this week, then go to a weekend tournament in Canastota.
