Of all the possible opponents the Liverpool girls lacrosse team could have dealt with, it could not have chosen someone more daunting — or conditions more harrowing. West Genesee, with its back-to-back state Class A titles and a 51-game win streak, hosted the Warriors last Saturday night, and pulled away in the second half to beat Liverpool 13-4. As if facing the Wildcats wasn’t daunting enough, Liverpool also had to contend with temperatures in the 30s, winds up to 40 miles per hour and all kinds of precipitation, from rain to snow. Given all this, the Warriors played quite well in the first half, slowing the game’s tempo and using long possessions to keep WG within sight. As they went to the break, Liverpool only trailed 5-2, and had a reasonable chance. WG took that away, though, using its speed and skill to wear down the Warriors in the second half as Bre Hudgins and Morgan Corso (three goals each) led the way. Jennifer VanderMeulen put up three of the Warriors’ four goals, with Kathleen Conese getting the other. Mikey Meagher had a strong game in the net, recording 17 saves. Weather threatens the Warriors’ planned trip to Baldwinsville on Tuesday night before a Friday game against Rome Free Academy. As with 2008, all of Liverpool’s home dates are at Solvay High School’s Earl Hadley Stadium.
