No matter the setting, if Alex Hatz runs, he’s got a great chance to win.
The state Class AA cross country champion in the fall, Hatz added to his resume by taking the 1,000-meter title at last Saturday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet at Cornell University.
Knowing that he had to square off with, among others, Marcellus star Chris Stogsdill, Hatz went to the lead at the opening gun and dared anyone to catch him.
No one did, as Hatz, a junior, crossed the finish line in two minutes, 27.86 seconds. Tyler Stewart (Colonie) was second, in 2:29.74, just inches ahead of Stogsdill (2:29.90) in third place.
Brendan Farrell, also from F-M, finished 12th in the mile with a time of 4:34.06, just as Jamesville-DeWitt’s David Salbert took 23rd place in the triple jump, going 41 feet 8 3/4 inches.
In girls action, F-M star Courtney Chapman earned a medal of her own in the 1,500-meter run. With a solid time of 4:39.82, Chapman landed in third place, as Emily Lipari (Roslyn) won in 4:32.59 and Shelby Greaney (Suffern) finished second in 4:36.41.
F-M also took fifth in the 4×800 relay as Chapman, Hannah Luber, Jessica Marini and Gennie Ariotti posted a time of 9:37.74. Bronxville won in 9:19.20.
CBA had a ninth-place finish in the 4×400 relay as Julia Quigley, Taylor Gait, Melissa Zajdel and Katie Brislin earned a time of 4:13.77. On her own, Zajdel was 14th at 300 meters (41.77 seconds) as Carol Giblin was 23rd at 1,000 meters (3:09.54). J-D’s Eileen Cody was 29th in the 3,000-meter run in 11:42.67.
