As the culmination of a championship run, the Baldwinsville wrestling team had two of its best stars go to the top of the awards podium during Sunday’s Section III Division I (large school) championship meet at Utica Memorial Auditorium. Anthony Finocchiaro, at 112 pounds, added a sectional title to his growing win total, while Kyle Sheridan emerged with a hard-fought victory at 215 pounds. Finocchiaro and Sheridan both automatically advanced to this weekend’s state championship meet at Times Union Center in Albany, and many of their teammates did lots of work to try and join them. Already past 100 wins for his career, Finocchiaro began his title quest by pinning Antonio DeLuco (Rome Free Academy) in 1:46. In the semifinals against Shayne Brady (Carthage), Finocchiaro worked the points until he had beaten Brady in a technical fall in 5:44. Only in the finals, as a heavy favorite against Cole Farsaci (Canastota), did things get close. Finocchiaro had a 5-0 lead going to the third period, but Farsaci came back and made it tight, though Finocchiaro held on for a 6-4 decision. Meanwhile, Sheridan got a great opening on his way to the title. It began with Sheridan pinning Jamie Landry (East Syracuse-Minoa) in 1:33, then using defense on Kyle Morehouse in a 5-0 decision. So it all rode on Sheridan facing Cicero-North Syracuse’s Austin Morris. For two periods, the rivals engaged in a 0-0 duel, and both sides got docked points in the third period. Finally, a Sheridan takedown with 45 seconds left made the difference as he won, 3-1, to earn the sectional title. Joey Shaheen took third place at 96 pounds. Along the way, he pinned Tyler Christman (Rome Free Academy) in the quarterfinals, then won two consolation matches, culminating in a second-period pin of CNS’s Heather Kubacki for third. At 140 pounds, Antonio Peck finished third. Starting as a no. 8 seed, Peck lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual champion, CNS’s Todd Hagger, but recovered to win three times in consolation matches, including a 3-1 decision over Chittenango’s Anthony Galli in the third-place match. Sean Hennigan earned fourth place at 160 pounds, earning wins over Larry Benjamin (Rome Free Academy), Anthony Drohan (Indian River) and Tom Capone (Watertown), but dropping the consolation bracket final to Travis France (Fulton) 2-0. In a strange 130-pound quarterfinal, B’ville teammates Tim Hamm and Cookie Caloia met each other, with Hamm winning 3-1. Hamm would go on to finish fifth, beating Ron Burghart (Central Square) 6-3 for that spot. Corey Buyck (189 pounds), Nikko Manning (171 pounds) and Nate Russell (145 pounds) also wrestled.
