McLaughlin gets three wins at sectional meet

Both the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill and Oneida indoor track and field teams went west to Manley Field House for the Section III championship meets.

When it came to the boys meet on Tuesday night, Oneida, led by Pat McLaughlin, did quite well, earning fifth place in a field of 10 with 42 points. Jamesville-DeWitt, with 106 points, finished on top.

McLaughlin put on quite an individual show. He had the fastest time of the night in any class in the 55-meter hurdles, winning in 7.80 seconds, the first of three individual titles on the night.

To win a tight high jump battle with Mexico’s Dan Horn, McLaughlin cleared 6 feet 1 inch, edging Horn (6 feet) at the wire. In the long jump, McLaughlin made it three titles when he soared 22 feet 2 inches.

Matt Gilmeister gave Oneida another title when he threw the shot put 45 feet 1/2 inch, topping Phoenix’s Kyle Barry (43 feet 8 1/2 inches) and everyone else.

Bryan Rose ran to sixth place in the 1,000-meter run in 2:58.55. He also teamed with Jeb Stewart, Ben Adams and James Barr to finish sixth in the 4×400 relay in 3:58.11, Oneida’s best relay showing of the night.

On the girls end last Monday night, VVS had a solid showing, earning 28 points for sixth place, though J-D won here, too, with 142 points.

Kerry Miley claimed third place in the 600-meter run in 1:47.54 as she joined Madeline Jones, Casey Kane and Patrice Jacobus for fourth place in the 4×400 relay in 4:44.27. Jones ran to fifth place (46.40 seconds) in the 300-meter dash.

In the 4×800 relay, Kane, Jacobus, Miley and Emily Hudson combined for fourth place in 11:00.07, with VVS also sixth in the 4×200 relay (2:05.60).

Lauren McDonald ran to a fourth-place time of 12:01.80 in the 3,000-meter run as Emily Hudson finished fifth (3:30.52) in the 1,000. McKenna Novak was sixth in the 55-meter hurdles.

In field events, Kayla Graham went 29 feet 6 inches in the triple jump, while Jenna Fiacco threw the shot put 26 feet to match that fifth-place effort.
