Warriors edge CNS for girls indoor title

Regaining the winning touch that it had early this winter, the Liverpool girls indoor track and field team claimed first place at last Thursday night’s George Constantino Invitational at Manley Field House.

With a total of 46 points, the Warriors edged past Cicero-North Syracuse, who was second with 45 points. It was the first meet in two weeks, since the Jan. 28 John Arcaro Invitational got wiped out by winter weather.

Trina Bills earned 10 points for her side by racing to victory in the 1,000-meter run in 3:05.53, beating Jamesville-DeWitt’s Eileen Cody by nearly seven seconds as her teammate, Rachel Putman, finished third in 3:13.92.

In the 4×400 relay, Miranda McConnell, Jennifer VanderMeulen, Skye Borasky and Chenae Sinclair finished second in 4:19.57. McConnell grabbed fifth place in the 600-meter run in 1:45.54 as Armani Moore was fourth (9.31 seconds) in the 55-meter hurdles.

Brigid Heenan claimed third in the 1,500-meter run in 5:00.13. In field events, Meagan Turner got third place in the high jump, clearing 4 feet 10 inches. Sara Rothenberg cleared 7 feet 6 inches for fifth in the pole vault as Francesca Tingue was sixth (28 feet 5 inches) in the pole vault.

As this was going on, Liverpool’s boys indoor track team tied Marcellus for third place with 30 points in its version of the Constantino meet. CNS and Corcoran shared the top spot with 41 points.

Corey Bundrage earned a third of those points by himself when he won the 55-meter hurdles in 7.89 seconds, the only competitor to beat the eight-second mark. Bundrage, Luis Alvarado, Justin Albro and Mike Samora teamed for fourth place in the 4×200 relay in 1:39.68.

Colin Savage was second to Alex Hatz (Fayetteville-Manlius) in the mile, as Savage finished in 4:29.45 and Hatz won in 4:18.46. Chris Clemons finished third in the 1,000-meter run in 2:39.88 and Alex Wilke took fifth in the 600-meter run in 1:28.01.

Liverpool’s girls will seek the Section III title Monday night at Manley, with the boys to follow on Tuesday night.
