Due to weather and Regents exams, the Solvay ice hockey team spent much of the last full week of January resting, getting healed for the homestretch and its appearance in the Section III Division II playoffs.
As this was going on, Tim Burgess, Division II’s top scorer, got Channel 9 Athlete of the Week honors. For his career, he has 137 points – 73 goals, plus 64 assists.
In a career of superlatives, Burgess gave the Bearcats another superlative performance during Saturday’s 11-3 romp over winless Central Square at State Fair Coliseum.
Leading from the start, Solvay kept converting as Burgess mostly served as a deft passer. He finished with six assists, to go with his two goals.
Josh Ginestro also found the net twice, adding a pair of assists in a deep Solvay attack where nine different players took turns getting goals.
Sam Schneider, Len Graf, Steve Adams, Ryan Chapman, Tom Missert, Mike Sniffen and Carmen Birenza each scored. Chapman had two assists, as did Alex Tripp. Dennis Scanlon, Mark Syron, Kyle McVey, Nick Downs and Shawn Hodgson joined Adams, Graf and Missert with assists.
Comfortably in second place in Division II (9-2-1) behind Corcoran (12-1), the Bearcats would go to Skaneateles Monday, then visit Onondaga Nation Arena Tuesday to face CBA/J-D before hosting Fulton Friday night.
