If it’s deep into January, then it’s time for the Bishop Grimes boys basketball team to start making its run to the top. At about the same time where the Cobras, a year ago, began to streak toward the Section III Class B-1 title, the same thing might be happening again. Grimes certainly sent a message about its intentions last Friday night, when it went to 14-1 Marcellus and pushed its way to a 73-64 victory over the Mustangs. The Cobras lost to Marcellus on Dec. 10, but since then the Mustangs had lost leading scorer Will Fiacchi for the season with a foot injury. Also, starting forward Zach Barbaro would be out for the rematch with his own injury issues. At full strength, Grimes jumped all over the Mustangs, leading 21-6 by the end of the first quarter. To its credit, Marcellus made up most of that margin by halftime, when it was 31-27, and it remained close until the fourth quarter. Grimes made the last and most important move, though, outscoring the Mustangs 23-15 in those last eight minutes while getting some first-rate individual efforts. Joe Basla pulled off his first career triple-double, blending in 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Basla was part of a diverse attack where Mike Stone had 20 points, Steve Dillmore added 12 points and Antron Irby matched Basla with 11 points. Mike Sugamosto added eight points. Even with the loss, Marcellus put four players in double figures. Dan Heil had 16 points, with Steve Raven (14 points), Joe Cornish (13 points) and Will Nolan (11 points) close behind. Grimes had to work through Monday’s game with Homer before a big Friday showdown with Westhill, who started the week 11-2 and had just ended Hannibal’s 13-game win streak on the same night the Cobras beat Marcellus. While all this was going on, Christian Brothers Academy’s boys team played Friday at Mexico and handled the Tigers 69-52. The Brothers (11-2) took over in the game’s middle stages, outscoring Mexico 39-19 in the second and third periods. Mike Goodman put home 24 points, including four 3-pointers, while Stefan Thompson earned 10 points. Anthony DelCoro had seven points as Troy Bullock and Greg Thomson each got six points. In back-to-back weekend tests, the Brothers go to Cortland on Friday and face Section V power Rush-Henrietta Saturday night in the Rochester suburbs.
