At 13-0 and at no. 3 in the state Class D rankings, the Hamilton girls basketball team traveled Saturday to New York Mills to look for 14 in a row — and would get it, taking charge in the second quarter to beat the Marauders 55-42.
The two sides traded baskets in the first quarter and ended up tied, 11-11. Hamilton took command, though, by getting 10 unanswered points in the second quarter, on its way to a 33-22 halftime advantage.
Then the Emerald Knights cranked up its defense in the third quarter, holding Mills to just six points as the margin grew to 45-28. Though the Marauders ate into that lead down the stretch, Hamilton’s perfect mark was intact.
As with the Rome Catholic game two nights earlier (which was in doubt until the fourth quarter), Kylie Martin had a star turn, with 22 points, while Jess Brawn stayed out of foul trouble this time to pick up 15 points and Jordan Peterson contributed 12 points.
Hamilton now gets to spend the next couple of weeks at home, playing three times, including a Friday-night visit from Richfield Springs.
