The Chittenango boys indoor track and field team found some success in the first two meets of the season. First, the Bears finished 11th at the Jan. 5 Jack Morse Relays at Manley Field House, earning 12 points. It tied for second in the high jump as Bruce Gondeck, by himself, cleared 6 feet, which accounted for seven points. Chittenango was fifth in both the 4×200 (1:42.24) and 1,600 sprint medley (3:59.64) relays as Eric Murray, Brian Bohne, Dan Scavone, Josiah Durfee, Phil Anson and Phil Pollock all got involved. Five days later, at the weather-delayed Christmas Relays at Hamilton College, the Bears got 14.33 points to tie for 13th place. Bohne and Scavone combined to finish third in the 200-meter dash (51.04 seconds) as Durfee and Dima Tarasevich got fifth in the 1,000, with Jim Swagler and Daryl Day fifth in the shot put. Continuing to work, Chittenango came back to Manley for last Thursday’s Kirschenheiter Relays and moved to a tie for ninth place with 12 points. Baldwinsville and Cicero-North Syracuse tied for the top spot with 41 points apiece. Seven of those points came when Pat Gardner and John Laplante tied for second in the pole vault, combining to clear 18 feet. Only CNS (22 feet 3 inches) did better. Gondeck again cleared 6 feet in the high jump, earning a tie for third place all by himself.
