If ever there was a time the Skaneateles boys basketball team could curse Central New York’s foul winter weather, it came in the first full week of January. Poised to build its 6-2 mark as a heavy favorite at Homer last Wednesday night, the Lakers instead saw that game snowed out. Instead, Skaneateles had to wait to play until Friday night, at home, and ran into trouble as Bishop Grimes showed up to beat the Lakers 69-57. As the defending Section III Class B-1 champions, the Cobras had started slow again this season, but was now riding its own four-game win streak that included prevailing in the Chittenango Coaches vs. Cancer Classic during the holiday break. Grimes quickly took charge, putting Skaneateles in a 20-13 deficit, but the Lakers slowed the momentum in the second period, closing within four, 32-28, by halftime. All that changed in the third quarter, though. With Mike Stone and Zach Vaught leading the way, Grimes outscored Skaneateles 24-12 in that frame, and the Lakers did not recover. Stone finished with 21 points, with Vaught close behind as he got 20 points. Meanwhile, the Lakers only had Nick Pesarchick reach double figures, as he had 17 points. Jon Chapman and Kelly Donigan each had nine points, with Kevin Rice struggling most of the night as he, Tom Schoener and Brandon Barron each had six points. Skaneateles will now get its shot at knocking off 11-0 Marcellus as the long-time rivalry resumes Wednesday night before the Lakers make a tough Friday trip to Westhill.
