Perhaps the shift of power in girls volleyball, with West Genesee and Baldwinsville switching roles, has become a bit more permanent. Victimized for years by the Bees, the Wildcats turned it all around with an epic five-game victory in the 2007 Section III Class AA championship match. And when the two sides gathered again in Camillus last Monday night, WG had an even better time, taking just four games to beat B’ville as all facets of its game appeared to click. Granted, the Wildcats have more players back from ’07 than the Bees do. But B’ville still has stalwarts like Lauren McVey, Laura Galvin and Erin Carrino on the floor, so a great effort is always required to beat them. WG displayed this effort in the opening game — and showed lots of poise, too. Down 6-1 and 16-12, it came back both times, then shook off the fact that it blew three consecutive game points to regain the serve at 25-24. When Morgan McDermott put away a kill at the net, the Wildcats were in front. Both sides made early runs in the second game and were tied, 14-14, before WG went in front for good. Scrambling and putting away points, the Wildcats won, 25-19, and were now close to a sweep. B’ville wouldn’t allow the sweep, breaking out of an exchange of points in the third game at 10-10 and never trailing again until it had a 25-19 win and an extension of the match. Not for long, though. WG served close to perfection in the fourth game, and sophomore libero Ashley Amidon got the last six points on her serve as it ended 25-12. Overwhelming the Bees with power the opponent once used to overwhelm them, McDermott piled up 19 kills and three blocks. Alyssa Sutherland stepped up with seven kills and five blocks, while Katie Griffin also had seven kills, to go with two aces and two blocks. Graham gained 25 assists, plus four kills, two aces and two blocks, as Chelsea Sedlacek earned 16 assists. For B’ville, Jenna Blujus had a team-best 11 kills and Galvin finished with 34 assists. WG might meet B’ville again Saturday at the Bees’ Fall Fling Tournament, and will go back north for a rematch with the Bees next Thursday night, Sept. 18.
