Canastota’s track and field teams both came out on top during last Friday’s rain-soaked Madison County Championships, where the Raiders served as hosts.
All told, Canastota finished with 217 points on the girls side, and 200 points to win the boys championship. In both cases, Oneida finished second, getting 166 points in girls action and 184 points in boys competition.
Allison Lasnicki breezed to victory in the girls 1,500-meter run in a time of 5:18.2, and also took the 3,000-meter run in 11:13.4 as Gina Micaroni finished second, in 12:08.3. Lasnicki anchored the Raiders’ 4×800 relay team that prevailed in 11:19.0.
On her own, Micaroni won the 400-meter hurdles, in 1:16.2, with Sarah Foran (1:18.9) taking second place, and also prevailed in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:10.9, well clear of Leah McDowell, who was second in 8:30.3. Katie Forth needed 18.7 seconds to take third in the 100-meter high hurdles.
Denae Rinaldo won the shot put with a toss 29 feet 3 3/4 inches and also threw the javelin 72 feet 2 inches to take that event, too, plus a fourth in the discus. Katherine Foran, clearing 7 feet, edged Sarah Foran (6 feet 6 inches) as part of a 1-2 finish in the pole vault. Kayla Rouse won the pentathlon, her 1,105 points just ahead of Tessa Gaglianese.
Over in the boys meet, Robbie Argentine beat the field in the mile in 4:41.6 and also won the 3,200-meter run in a clocking of 10:27.8. Aaron Walker, second in the mile (4:42.6), won the 800-meter run in 2:11.3, and Argentine ran to second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:55.1.
Alex Lang did his part by sweeping the hurdles events. He won the 110-meter high hurdles in 17.4 seconds and needed just 1:01.2 to prevail in the 400-meter hurdles.
Dan Sanford got second in the 400-meter dash in 53.7 seconds. Ray Smith ran to second in the 200-meter dash (24.9 seconds) and 100-meter dash (12.1 seconds) as Josh LaVoie earned third in the 100 in 12.5 seconds.
Argentine and Walker were present as Canastota won the 4×800 relay in 9:05.3, with Walker also running in the 4×400, which the Raiders won in 3:49.9. Jeff Willis prevailed in the pole vault again, clearing 12 feet to do so.
