Competing at Manley Field House for the first time this winter, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys indoor track and field team proved to have no equal.
In the CNY Counties League opener, last Wednesday’s Jack Morse Relays, the Northstars had 68 out of a possible 100 points, well clear of Liverpool, who was second with 46 points as Baldwinsville (31.5 points) took third place.
Andy Kahl went even higher in the high jump, clearing 6 feet 10 inches, a full foot better than anyone else as he and Devin Mertens (fourth, 5 feet 8 inches) won with a combined clearance of 12 feet 6 inches. Kahl later teamed with Jake Whritenour, Nathan MacNabb and Kevin Cusworth for second place (10:57.28) to Liverpool (10:51.43) in the distance medley relay.
Craig Barber joined in during the pole vault, as his top individual clearance of 12 feet 6 inches helped Tony Mitton finish on top with a total of 21 feet 6 inches. Dan Minahan and Richied Lickfield teamed for second (90 feet 9 1/4 inches) behind Henninger (96 feet 2 3/4 inches) in the shot put.
On the oval, Jeff Azzoto, Vince St. James, Devin Young and Nathan MacNabb worked together and won the sprint medley relay in 3:43.68, nearly five seconds ahead of Baldwinsville (3:48.43).
Elsewhere, Tony Rogers, Brandon Marlow, Ty Howington and Shaun Hyde teamed up for second place in the 4×400 relay (3:39.85), less than a second behind Mexico.
Chris Taddeo, Wes Kufel, Jeff Quick and Mike Velasco got the runner-up spot in the 4×800 (8:45.94) behind Liverpool, as Young and St. James helped Ben Brown and Kyle Kudzinski finish third (1:36.98) in the 4×200 relay.
