Another month, another setting — but the same sense of total frustration for the Solvay girls volleyball team.

Just as it had done back on Dec. 6, the Bearcats pushed undefeated Marcellus to the limit, renewing the passions of a great rivalry.

And here, just as then, Solvay’s quest for an upset fell just short, as the Mustangs prevailed in five games — the fourth time this season the Bearcats were beaten in a five-game match.

Drawing upon the confidence of that earlier meeting, Solvay roared to a victory in the first game, 25-18, and did not get rattled when Marcellus rolled through the second game, 25-15, to get even.

In the third game, it got tight, but the Bearcats made the plays at the end to prevail, 25-21, and go up 2-1, on the brink of a breakthrough.

Marcellus didn’t allow it, though, as it dominated each of the last two games by scores of 25-11 and 25-15 to move its record to 11-0.

Jordan Bakowski was a big front-line presence for the Bearcats, earning 10 kills and seven blocks, while Erica Lamanna had nine kills and Ashley Hunter emerged as a threat, with eight kills. Brittni Casimiro, taking over as the main setter in Cate Callisto’s absence, had 26 assists.

As she had done many other times, the Mustangs’ Lauren Fletcher used her power to subdue Solvay as she poured out 34 kills and 10 blocks. Jenn Daley had 41 assists.

On Thursday night, Solvay (5-8) will get another chance at a signature win when it hosts defending Section III Class B champion Cazenovia.
