In the absence of a major rival, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls indoor track and field team had even more fun in Monday’s Bob Grieve Invitational at Manley Field House.
With 108 points, the Northstars won its fourth consecutive meet and nearly doubled the total of second-place Fayetteville-Manlius (59 points) as Liverpool, with 48 points, took third place.
No doubt, CNS benefited from the fact that Baldwinsville, with a high capability of putting up points, did not attend the meet due to weather cancellations in that school district.
If present, the Bees would have made major inroads since this was the first meet of the season where individual events were contested as such, without combined times, distances or heights.
Regardless of the circumstances, CNS flourished, using three victories in field events as the foundation its point total.
Monique Roberts won the long jump, going 16 feet 2 1/4 inches. Sommer Cloinger continued her domination of the shot put, throwing it 36 feet 1 inch, while McKaye Neumeister prevailed in the triple jump by going 33 feet 9 1/2 inches. Gina Campagna was second (5 feet 1 inch) in the high jump to account for eight points.
Meanwhile, on the oval, CNS earned a 1-2 sweep in the 55-meter high hurdles as Keriann Borke won in 9.18 seconds and Jasmine Thompson (9.32 seconds) finished right behind her. Borke was also fourth in the 55-meter dash, in 7.86 seconds, as Janise Harper (7.89 seconds) was sixth.
Taylor Wendler proved to be the star in the 3,000-meter run, as the freshman covered the distance in 10:54.79, the only girl in the field to break 11 minutes as Westhill’s Brittany Pelsue (11:09.38) was a distant second.
Piling up more points, Linsday Raulli (5:01.32) and Alicia Finger (5:05.20) were third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,500-meter run, while Katie Duerr needed 3:04.87 to finish second in the 1,000-meter run behind East Syracuse-Minoa’s Leah Andrianos (2:57.34).
Neumeister claimed third place in the 600-meter run in 1:42.51 as teammate Lauren Spink (1:43.11) finished sixth. Alicia Greco, Ashley Messur, Leigha DeStefano and Mackenzie Hall combined to take fourth place in the distance medley relay in 13:43.53.
The CNS boys team, which had dominated all three of it previous meets, saw last Wednesday’s Grieve meet postponed by snow. They hope to return Wednesday night for the John Arcaro Invitational.
