For eight long days, the Cazenovia boys basketball team went through the motions of practice, increasingly eager to get back into game action after roaring to a 3-0 start.
That eagerness was on display Friday night, when the Lakers ignored any possible rust, went into Jordan-Elbridge and tore up the Eagles in the course of a 74-44 victory to make it four in a row.
Already praised for its ability to shut an opponent down, the Lakers showed at J-E that it could produce on the other end of the court, too.
Steady, consistent scoring helped the Lakers build a 41-26 lead by halftime, and when Cazenovia went on a 16-8 spurt in the third period, the game was settled.
Trent Widrick broke out, hitting on four 3-point field goals on his way to a career-best 19 points. Aaron Burbidge also sank a pair of 3-pointers on his way to 14 points for the night.
What made Widrick and Burbidge so effective was that Cazenovia wasn’t quiet in the paint. Cody Ash, Tom Eschen and Chris Nourse each put up eight points, and Peter Lokai added five points for more variety. In all, 11 of the 12 players that saw action got at least one field goal.
The Lakers are at home Wednesday night to take on Solvay, this before a key Friday showdown with namesake Skaneateles, who carried its own undefeated mark (3-0) into the week.
