If the Westhill boys soccer team had gained local superiority due to its 3-0 shutout of reigning state Class B champion Skaneateles on Oct. 10, the ensuing games would serve as further proof.
Hosting Syracuse Academy of Science last Wednesday night, the Warriors pulled off another shutout and produced its highest output of the season in an 8-0 romp over the Atoms.
It was 5-0 by halftime, and again Bo BenYehuda led the way, finding the net three times for the hat trick and adding an assist as Danny Carkner got two goals and one assist.
Jackson Powers had one goal and one assist, with Emmet Starowitz and Ben King also converting. Will Delano contributed an assist, too.
Handling Mater Dei Academy 9-2 on Thursday, the Warriors this time had Carkner at the forefront as he netted four goals, with BenYehuda scoring twice. Delano, Powers and Brian Kenny had one goal apiece.
As for Skaneateles, it would face another big Saturday rivalry game when it played Marcellus, yet this result would differ from the week before as the Lakers fought past the Mustangs 1-0.
It took Andrew Moss scoring in the first half off a feed from Aidan Chabot for Skaneateles to move out in front. From there, it turned into a stalemate that showcased the defense on both sides.
None of the Lakers’ other shots got past Marcellus goalie Cory Cangemi, who got nine saves. But while the Mustangs had its own opportunities, Marcus McClanahan stopped all six shots he faced for the shutout.
Before this, Skaneateles was pushed again in last Tuesday’s game against New Hartford, but still edged the Spartans in another 1-0 decision.
Landon Hellwig would put the Lakers in front thanks to a first-half goal, and it proved enough, with the defense limiting New Hartford to just three shots all night.
It was more lopsided in Thursday’s 6-0 shutout over Syracuse Academy of Science, with Skaneateles doubling its New Hartford output in the first half alone to lead 2-0 and then taking it much further.
Ryan Willard, with two goals, led the way as Moss, Nick Cerimeli and Colin Gaglione each had one goal and one assist. Dan Ramsgard also scored as Hellwig and Max Wamp added assists.
West Genesee continued its string of tough SCAC Metro division games with a trip to the Gillette Road complex last Tuesday night, where it could not quite knock off Cicero-North Syracuse in a 1-0 defeat.
It was rare for the Wildcats to generate a consistent attack, held to just three shots, and for long while WG was just as stingy as the game remained 0-0.
Only once did the defense bend, and it proved the difference. C-NS midfielder Zayne Throckmorton put a shot past Josh Farrell (who had six saves), and the Wildcats could not answer it.
Now the Wildcats took on Liverpool Friday night, and again lost by a 1-0 margin, its defense solid most of the way but not able to answer Jaiden Reynolds’ early goal for the Warriors. WG fell to 1-4 overall.
