Just as in 2010, the Fayetteville-Manlius and Christian Brothers Academy soccer teams teamed up for a Saturday doubleheader to raise money for breast cancer awareness. The venue changed, as they went to CBA’s Alibrandi Stadium after the inaugural event was held at Swan Pond. But the “Kick For A Cure” event raised thousands for breast cancer research through the sale of hundreds of pink T-shirts at the two schools. For the games, there were also special jerseys, as F-M wore black shirt with pink numbers and CBA donned white shirts with pink numbers, all of them sporting the “Kick For A Cure” logo. As to the results, they both went in the Hornets’ favor – 1-0 in the boys game, 2-1 in the girls game, with lots of drama contained within. Though missing some starters in the lineup (including Alex Baynes and Paul Kwoyelo), F-M had plenty of chances in the first half, but could not get it past CBA goalie Kevin Bailey. Just the same, the Brothers’ Manny Collins had several runs to the net without converting. So they went to the second half 0-0. In the 51st minute, Bailey went out to play a long cross, but fumbled the ball just long enough so that F-M’s Haile Marr could poke it away and hit it into the unoccupied net. F-M protected that one-goal margin the rest of the way as play turned more physical – in fact, Collins and George Dise both would leave the game with injuries. Maybe CBA’s best chance came from Andrew DePerro, who had a close-up chance with 2:20 left, but hit it just wide left. Kevin Chapman stopped all eight shots he faces, while Bailey earned 11 saves. Then it was the girls turn, and this time CBA got on the board, inching ahead 1-0 in the first half as the Hornets, playing for the third time in five days, appeared a bit weary. But in the second half the Hornets were reenergized, and tied it on Sarah Rosenbaum’s goal. Then, with three minutes left in regulation, Cheyenne Hall beat Courtney Henderson for the game-winner. Alexis Muraco and Frankie Boyer each got credit for assists. In the lead-up, both sides had mixed results. When the CBA girls edged past Cortland 1-0 last Monday night, it gave Mike McQuatters his 100th win as the Brothers’ head coach. Eva Gordon assisted on Olivia Pitonzo’s second-half goal that broke a 0-0 deadlock, and Courtney Henderson stopped all nine shots she faced. Two days later, CBA had an easier time of it, beating Phoenix 6-0. F-M’s girls hammered Utica Proctor 7-0 last Tuesday as Hall picked up a three-goal hat trick. Rosenbaum found the net twice, while Jess Straub managed a goal and two assists. Marri Ryu added one goal and one assist. Katie Randall and Kaitlyn DeHority earned assists, too. Now the Hornets tried to avenge its 3-1, Sept. 9 defeat to Liverpool on its home turf 12 days later. It was closer, but once again the Hornets lost to the Warriors in a 2-1 decision. Nina Quigley withstood plenty of attacks on her way to 14 saves, and F-M got on the board with Ryu’s second-half goal, fed by Straub. However, Liverpool used goals by Kim Murphy and Julia Heberger to take the lead, and got 10 saves from Tori Corsaro to hang on. By contrast, on Tuesday both the F-M and CBA boys sides met serious resistance. The Hornets had to settle for a 0-0 draw with Liverpool, while the Brothers took its first loss of the season, 2-1, to Fulton. F-M, with Liverpool, found itself in the same kind of battle that it had against Cicero-North Syracuse on Sept. 10. The only difference was that, this time, neither side would convert in regulation or overtime, the Hornets unable to get any of its 10 shots past Warrior goalie Karl Miller. As for CBA, it also played to a 0-0 tie with Fulton in the first half. Collins, off a feed from Ken Slack, got the Brothers on the board in the second half, but the Red Raiders’ Eric Naioti notched one goal and one assist (on Shaun O’Connor’s scoring play) to inch in front. Bailey had five saves, three less than Fulton counterpart Tyler French. Then CBA had to play East Syracuse-Minoa Friday night, but defeated the Spartans 2-0 to seize the outright lead in the OHSL Freedom division. Collins and Pat Pierret notched the goals, both of them in the first half, while DePerro and George Dise each had one assist. A solid CBA defense made sure ESM did not answer, as Bailey got eight saves to preserve the shutout. F-M returned to the win column on Thursday, dismissing Central Square 6-0 as Tyler Forbes and Zach Charles both registered three-goal hat tricks. Marr finished with a pair of assists, while Brendan Murray, Ben Storie and Josh Fine also had assists.
