One more time, the West Genesee girls track and field team got to perform in front of a home crowd last Wednesday afternoon, in summer-like heat far removed from the winter-like chill present only days earlier.
The Wildcats prevailed, 111-24, over Nottingham, with Carly Benson featured as she started out by helping E Morey, Faith Knox and L Puchta take the 4×800 relay in 10 minutes, 37.2 seconds.
Then Benson beat the field in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.2 and took the 800-meter run in 2:37.2. To cap off her big day, Benson, paired with Emily Young, Katherine Graziano and Natalie Buckhout, took the 4×400 relay in 4:37.1.
Kelsey Fox led a sweep of the field events, clearing 7 feet 6 inches in the pole vault and going 14’10” in the long jump. Amina Mambambu won the triple jump with 30’7 ½” as Julia Logana took the shot put (28’5”), Etana Davis the discus (86’2 ½”) and Phoebe Anderson the high jump by clearing 4’6”.
Knox took the 3,000-meter run in 11:45.8 as Young won the 1,500-meter run in 5:09 flat. Olivia Becker claimed the 100-meter hurdles in 18.2 seconds and Madalyn Benson went 1:15.4 to win the 400 hurdles. Fox, Mambambu, Caitlin Mills, and Sandra Gardino won the 4×100 relay in 51.4 seconds.
To start this busy week, Marcellus met Solvay head-to-head last Monday, and the Mustangs defeated the Bearcats 74-67 in a three-team event where each of the sides lost to Cazenovia.
The Bearcats’ Ashley Bosco only participated in the shot put, winning that event with a heave of 35 feet 9 inches as Cazenovia won every other field event.
Serenity Thomas matched Cazenovia’s Chloe Smith in the 100-meter dash, each finishing in 13.3 seconds, with Thomas second in the 100 hurdles in 18.0 seconds.
Marcellus had Alaura Cushman edge the Bearcats’ Phoebe Guadagnolo in the 200-meter dash, though both finished in 30.6 seconds. Julianna Szczech cleared 8 feet in the pole vault as Carolyn Carlic took second place in the 400 hurdles in 1:19.8.
Westhill was back in action last Tuesday against Chittenango and rolled past the Bears 97-44, with Noelle Coolican clearing 9’6” in the pole vault to beat out Ashley Heffernan (9 feet) as Heffernan was victorious in the long jump, going 16’3”.
Hannah Abraham threw the discus 79’6” to prevail as Lennah Abraham tossed the shot put 28 feet to edge out Kayla Helfeld (27’3”), with Lauren Marshall going 32’8” to win the triple jump.
Alyssa Holstein claiming wins in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.4 seconds and the 400-meter hurdles in 1:15.8. Ciarra Rudnick went 27.7 seconds to win the 200 sprint as Molly Bobbett (1:06.4) held off Megan O’Reilly (1:07.4) in the 400 sprint.
Liz Kessler went 5:17.8 to edge Haylei Coolican (5:17.9) in the 1,500-meter run. Rudnick, Ashley Bolesh (who was second in the triple jump), Heffernan and Caitlin McIntyre took the 4×100 in 52.9 seconds as Bobbett, O’Reilly, Bolesh and Katherine Evans claimed the 4×400 in 4:26.3.
Jordan-Elbridge lost, 99-42, to Skaneateles last Wednesday as conditions changed from the chill of April to temperatures that neared 90 degrees.
Theresa Dristle prevailed for the Eagles in the 1,500 in 5:30.3 and was second in the 3,000, with Madison Daly winning the 800 in 2:50.6 to edge the Lakers’ Georgia McSwain (2:51.2).
Dristle and Daly helped J-E go 11:23 flat to win the 4×800, with Hannah Fichter second in the 400 hurdles. Kyler Langhorn earned the Eagles’ lone win in a field event when she had a top long jump of 34’ ½” as Ashlee Eaton was second in the long jump and Kyra White second in the pole vault, clearing 7’6”.
The Marcellus girls took part in Thursday’s East Syracuse Minoa Invitational, where Meghan Strempel had the best finish for the Mustangs, getting to fourth place in the 3,000 in 11:36.71 as Macie Szalach finished sixth in the pentathlon with 1,720 points.
Sophia Shaw tied for fourth in the high jump, clearing 4’6”, and Szczech cleared 7’6” in the pole vault to take fifth place. Cushman was sixth in the 400 sprint in 1:06.98. Emma Stuart was seventh in the discus and Olivia Bird seventh in the 1,500.
Then, on Saturday at the Rome Free Academy Girls Invitational, WG roared to a second-place finish with 112 points, trailing only the host Black Knights (122.5 points) as Westhill was fourth with 60 points.
Young, in 1:00.30, beat out Kuppinger (1:02.15) in a 1-2 sweep of the 400 sprint before Carly Benson won the 3,000 in 10:35.11.
Mills was second (13.17 seconds) and Mambambu third (13.24) in the 100 sprint, but Mambambu, Fox, Sydney Lewis and Mattison Hunt edged RFA, 50.43 seconds to 50.73, to win the 4×100 as Kuppinger, Young, Fox and Phoebe Anderson won the 4×400 in 4:11.12, with Westhill second in 4:24.71. Fox took fourth place in the long jump.
Knox was second in the 1,500 in 5:13.06, with Buckhout fifth as Madalyn Benson took fifth in the 400 hurdles. The Wildcats got second place in the 4×800 in 10:23.40, just ahead of Westhill, who was third in 10:25.07. WG also was second in the 1,600 sprint medley.
Westhill had Marshall get second place in the 100 hurdles in 18.03 seconds, with Quinn Mannion (18.08) fourth. Heffernan cleared 8’6” for third place in the pole vault as Marshall got fourth place in the triple jump. Haylei Coolican finished fourth in the 3,000 and Liz Kessler took fifth in the 400 sprint.
