Two more wins separate the Jamesville-DeWitt girls soccer team from what it has long desired, but never attained – namely, the state Class A championship.
Fresh off opening the state tournament last Tuesday at Stillwater High School with a 2-0 shutout over long-time Section II nemesis Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, the Red Rams faced Section X’s Franklin Academy in Saturday’s regional final, played much closer to home at Fulton.
And J-D had no trouble in that game, getting the season’s 13th shutout by a 5-0 margin.
The Rams’ s tried-and-true formula, mixing pressure with defensive consistency, paid off again. Eighth-grader Katie Cappelletti only had to make three saves as Sophia Dimkopoulos, Elena Haarer, Chloe Hayward, Ciara Norris and the rest of the Rams’ back line mostly kept Franklin quiet.
On the other end, J-D bolted out to a 3-0 halftime lead, and then added two more in the second half.
Alex Fontana, who netted both goals in the Oct. 30 sectional final against New Hartford, scored twice in this game, too, as did Catanzarite, with Sherling adding one goal and one assist. Dimkopoulos, Allie Balotin and Alex Epifani earned one assist apiece.
Waiting for J-D in Saturday’s state Class A semifinal at 5 p.m. at Tompkins County Community College in Dryden is Section IX champion Goshen, which is a story in itself.
Goshen was the team who, last Tuesday, knocked out unbeaten, no. 1-ranked defending state champion Somers (Section I) in penalty kicks and, by doing so, prevented the Tuskers from standing in J-D’s way again, just as it did in 2014 when it beat the Rams in a 2-1 decision.
Then Goshen endured another round of penalty kicks in Saturday’s regional final with Section IV champion Corning-Painted Post, surviving again to reach the state final four.
The winner of that game between J-D and Goshen goes to Sunday’s final at 10:30 a.m. at SUNY-Cortland against Williamsville East (Section VI) or Islip (Section XI).
