Now the Baldwinsville girls swim team is plunging into the heart of its schedule, finding out just how tough competition is everywhere in Central New York.
Still, the Bees had plenty of highlights in last Wednesday night’s meet at Oswego, as Noelle Staso won twice and others got individual titles, too, during a 102-81 defeat to the Buccaneers.
Staso first prevailed in the shortest race, the 50-yard freestyle, where in a time of 25.93 seconds she outpaced Oswego’s Elaina Randon (26.90 seconds) by nearly a full second.
Then, in the longest race, the 500 freestyle, Staso displayed her versatility, roaring to a time of 5:32.03 to leave the rest of the field, including the Bucs’ Reese Davis (6:16.06), far back.
Grace Smith finished second (1:01.66) to Rando (59.03 seconds) in a competitive 100 freestyle, but had already triumphed in the 200 freestyle, where in 2:16.39 she got away from Oswego’s Katie Smith (2:21.02) to finish in front.
Amanda Johnson earned the Bees’ other individual title, in the 100 breaststroke. Just before that, Johnson was second (1:05.37) to Caitlin Gorton (1:03.61) in the 100 backstroke.
Erin Mordaunt was second in the 100 butterfly, unable to keep pace with Gorton’s first-place clocking of 59.44 seconds. This was after Mordaunt, paired with Johnson, Staso and Erin Burchill, went 2:03.94 in the 200 medley relay, with Oswego (1:59.89) getting to first place.
Baldwinsville is home Tuesday to take on struggling Liverpool before meet next Friday against Christian Brothers Academy at the Le Moyne College pool.
