Due to the big numbers posted by the likes of Nick Joss early this season, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys bowling team had risen to the top of the Onondaga High School League standings.
But that lead only lasted until last Thursday’s match against Auburn at Falcon Bowl, where two 5-0 teams went at it and the Northstars could not quite keep up in a 2-1 defeat to the Maroons.
Josh Cloute, in defeat, led C-NS with a 624 series that included a 246 high game. Zach Emm’s 237 game led to a 572 set, while Jacob Fox, with a 609 series, beat out Joss and his 606 series (220 high game). Austin Masters added a 568 series.
Auburn prevailed through its consistency at the top of its roster. Andrew Kopec, with a 630 series, was closely followed by Richard McConnell (601 series, 224 high game) and Tyler Quinn (599 series, 225 high game), with Shane Lawrence producing a three-game total of 567.
At least C-NS got a point on the boys side, something the girls Northstars could not manage in a 3-0 defeat to Auburn where Kate Stoddard led the Maroons with a 627 series.
Before that, the Northstars remained unblemished after meeting West Genesee last Tuesday night and sweeping past the Wildcats 3-0.
Joss didn’t get a 299 game, like he did the week before against Liverpool, and only picked up a 539 series. But his teammates more than made up for it.
Cloute steadily worked his way to a 683 series and 246 high game as Fox shot a 258 during his 632 set and Emm managed a 596 series and top game of 221. WG’s Steve Weiskopff picked up a 257 game and earned a three-game total of 666.
Over in the girls match, C-NS also prevailed 3-0 over West Genesee. Kaitlin Antineli put up a 216 high game on her way to a 525 series, with Taylor Puttkamer adding a 457 series and 161 high game. Carly Lescenski contributed a three-game total of 421.
Liverpool, meanwhile, saw its girls team break into the win column last Monday afternoon, at Green Lakes Bowl, where it pulled off a sweep of Fayetteville-Manlius.
In the girls match, where the Warriors picked up 2 ½ points and the Hornets only got half a point, F-M’s Marta Polosky had the best individual series of 471, but Liverpool showcased more depth.
Dailyn McCarthy set the pace with a 179 high game and 426 series. Jordan Achibeque managed a 406 series, with Yasminah Moore (365 series), Jordan Smith (360 series) and Meghan Milazzo (314 series) trailing.
But the Liverpool boys team could not quite match the girls, falling 2-1 to F-M despite Dietrick Roberson’s 573 series and 226 high game. Jimmy Santy added a 504 series (188 high game), with Jason Carter getting a 449 series. Isaac Blanford led the Hornets with a 573 series and top game of 213.
