By splitting two meets in a 48-hour span, the Baldwinsville girls swim team would stay at the .500 mark, taking a 3-3 record into October.
The meets included last Thursday night’s showdown with undefeated West Genesee. And while the Bees had some individual highlights, it still lost, 52-41, to the Wildcats, who stayed tied for first in the CNY Counties League with Cicero-North Syracuse after the Northstars beat Liverpool that same evening.
It started well for B’ville, who had the quartet of Amanda Johnson, Brooke Atkinson, Lauren Burchill and Noelle Staso get to 1:58.33 in the 200 individual medley.
But then WG won each of the next seven races before Johnson, in the 100 backstroke, prevailed in 1:05.79, and even in that race she barely held off the Wildcats’ Becca Kanoza (1:05.83).
Burchill, in the 100 breaststroke, got to first place in 1:13.55, with Grace Smith (1:17.33) second. Then Johnson, Atkinson and Staso, with Lauren Guild joining along, went 4:14.03 in the closing 400 freestyle relay.
WG had three different swimmers win twice, as Olivia Castro took the 50 and 100 freestyle, Shannon Cahalan claimed the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly and Kaitlin Dunning claimed the 200 and 500 freestyle.
Before that, though, B’ville hosted Syracuse last Tuesday night and won most of the early races to build an insurmountable margin, eventually prevailing by a score of 51-37.
Amanda Johnson was a focal point for the Bees, starting with the 200 medley relay, where she paired with Brooke Atkinson, Emma Atkinson and Lauren Burchill as B’ville prevailed in two minutes, 6.18 seconds.
Then, on her own, Johnson roared to first place in the 50 freestyle in 28.08 seconds and, completing a sprint sweep, also won the 100 freestyle in 1:01.21.
Emma Atkinson went 1:05.68 for first place in the 100 butterfly, this after Grace Smith earned first place in the 200 individual medley in 2:35.17.
Anna DiOrio, in 2:21.17, beat out teammate Alyse Baker (2:25.29) for top honors in the 200 freestyle, but Baker later joined Smith, Burchill and Allison Lange as the Bees earned a title in the 200 freestyle relay in a clocking of 1:59.03.
Now, after the loss to West Genesee, the schedule eases up a bit for the Bees, who hosts Fayetteville-Manlius next Thursday, its lone meet before an Oct. 8 showdown with Liverpool.
