Both of Baldwinsville’s track and field teams ended up together for the Section III Class AA championship meets, though that wasn’t the original plan. The girls Bees were supposed to go first with its AA meet Tuesday at Fulton, but violent storms kept the event from even getting started. So it was moved on Wednesday to Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium, where the boys AA championships were already scheduled. A long afternoon and evening followed, and three events (girls 2,000-meter steeplechase and 4×400 relay, plus boys 4×100 relay) had to be pushed back to Thursday at Rome Free Academy Stadium due to more weather delays. In the girls AA meet, B’ville finished fifth with 65 points as Fayetteville-Manlius, with 133 points earned the sectional title. Cierra Allen earned a victory in the 400-meter dash, her time of 57.12 seconds well clear of Corcoran’s Patrice Williams, who was second in 58.24 seconds. Katie Wicks was seventh. Moving to the 4×100 relay, Allen, teamed with Gabby Jordan, Stepahnie Vasteno and Angelica Tomasello, finished in 49.58 seconds, but settled for second place as Liverpool (49.23 seconds) gained the top spot. Ross tried to break up F-M’s dominating of distance running, as she ran 800 meters in 2:17.66, but finished second to the Hornets’ Katie Brislin, who won in 2:15.32. In the 4×800, Kelley Hull, Annie Peterson, Mia Bolton and Nicole Piontkowski went 9:57.35 and finished third. A day later, in the delayed 4×400, Allen, Katie Wicks, Marissa Lathrop and Mackenzie Ross posted 4:00.3 and was runner-up, a full second behind Liverpool, who won in 3:59.3, Peterson had to wait until Thursday, and Rome, before running in the 2,000 steeplechase and taking third place in 7:33.9, while Meghan Hull was eighth. Vasteno also was fifth in the 100-meter dash, (12.89 seconds), with Jordan (13.09 seconds) in sixth place. Carlie McNamara, eighth in the shot put, had a second-place discus throw of 98 feet 2 inches though it was well behind RFA’s Mariah Mays, who won with 120’10”. Emily Soeder was third in the high jump, clearing 5 feet. Elizabeth Wisely took seventh place in the pentathlon, while Jordan was seventh in the long jump. Danielle Piontkowski gained seventh place in the 400 hurdles as Rachael Miller was seventh in the 1,500-meter run, Annie Thompson got eighth in the 3,000-meter run and Tomasello was eighth in the 200 sprint. In the sectional AA boys meet, B’ville would pick up 53 points, matching the girls fifth-place effort as, again, F-M (143 points) pulled away for the victory. The Bees did win the 4×400 relay, though, as the quartet of Brennan LaQue, Dan Walker, Jeff Mahar and Nate Wicks hit the line in three minutes, 24.17 seconds, edging out F-M (3:24.78) to prevail. On his own, Mahar ran the 400-meter dash in 50.08 seconds and was runner-up to F-M’s Charlie Beeler (49.83 seconds), with Wicks fifth (51.47 seconds) and Walker (53.08 seconds) in sixth place and LaQue finishing eighth. Alec Peinkofer dueled with F-M star Nick Ryan in the 800-meter final, Peinkofer finishing in 1:53.26, but still finishing second to Ryan (1:52.29) as Andy Fleming (1:58.47) finished fifth and Connor Ross was eighth. Ross, Fleming, Josh Perez and Jack Martin were third (8:31.62) in the 4×800 relay. Pat McNamara, with a discus throw of 139 feet, just missed a victory as RFA’s Robert Alder threw it 139’3” to finish in front. Sam Smith, with 2,359 points, claimed fourth place in the pentathlon. Shawn Calnan cleared 5’10” for fifth place in the high jump, also finishing eighth in the long jump. Chad McCardell got to sixth place (17.13 seconds) in the 110 high hurdles, with Perez sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Cody Young was ninth in the shot put.
