Though they were the same rivals, meeting in the same location, as they had a week earlier, this time around the Cicero-North Syracuse boys track and field team got the better of Liverpool.

Remembering what had happened in their regular-season showdown, the Northstars got payback in Thursday’s CNY Counties League National division championship meet at Bragman Stadium.

That 72-69 defeat in the May 8 regular-season finale proved plenty of motivation for C-NS, who eight days later gathered up 178 points, enough to fend off the Warriors’ total of 159 points as Baldwinsville, with 137 points, was close behind in third place.

In the first individual track event, the 110-meter high hurdles, C-NS went 1-2 as Morgan Austen won in 15.22 seconds and Pete Girardi (15.74 seconds) was runner-up. Girardi went on to finish a close second (57.65 seconds) to West Genesee’s Pete Richardson (57.54 seconds) in the 400-meter hurdles, where Austen (58.53 seconds) was third.

Neil Gill needed 10:15.07 for a victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, with Chris Hannan in fifth. Avery Yarn got a key victory in the 400-meter dash in 51.97 seconds, with teammate Jeremy Rivera in fifth place. Bryan Sibble took fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:05 flat, with Bryan Bausinger sixth.

C-NS was victorious in the 4×100 relay, where Mark Broughton, Jalen Jenkins, Steve Mirizio and Nathan Hilt hit the line in 45.17 seconds, with the Warriors fifth. Yarn, Sibble, Shawn Webb and Evan Russell took second in the 4×400 relay in 3:38.58, where Liverpool finished fourth.

Liverpool did win the first relay, the 4×800, where Nick LeClair, Connor Buck, Dylan McCarthy and Landon Veney, in 8:47.37, held off the C-NS quartet of Bausinger, Paul DeGennaro, Evan Russell and Andrew Bearkland, who was second in 8:48.27, less than a second behind. Buck was third (10:36.97) and McCarthy fourth (11:08.11) in the steeplechase behind Gill.

The Warriors’ Ryheim Lawes won the 100-meter dash in 10.81 seconds to the 11.29 seconds posted by Broughton in second place. Then Lawes completed his sprint sweep by going 200 meters in 22.31 seconds, again with Broughton second (23.08 seconds) as Webb was fourth.

Alex Christensen helped Liverpool by winning the mile in 4:38.11, with Ben Petrella (4:39.39) in third place as the Northstars’ Anthony Lupia (4:39.45) was fourth. Petrella saved his best effort for the 3,200-meter run, where he won in 10:05.71 to Lupia’s 10:10.41, with LeClair third (10:15.33) and Gill fifth.

Christensen added a third-place time of 2:04.73 in the 800 as Brockton Barton was fourth in the 400 sprint, with Gaurab Bhattacharya fourth in the 400 hurdles.

In field events, C-NS earned a victory when Joe Castaldo, in the shot put, threw it 48 feet 10 inches, with Liverpool’s Geoffrey Bell third as he tossed it 45’3 1/2″. Later, Costaldo, with a discus throw of 125’2″, was third, ahead of Logan Lickfield in fifth, but behind the Warriors’ Chris Granell (126’5″) in second place.

Liverpool struck when Travis Chewning-Kulick cleared 12 feet in the pole vault and beat C-NS’s Tate LaPorte (11’3″) and Connor Osborne (11 feet) to prevail, with the Warriors’ Gavin Youker in fifth place.

Mark Vanmarter, fifth in the 200 sprint, made his way to the top in the long jump for Liverpool, going exactly 21 feet, with Lawes (19’4 1/2″) in third place and the Northstars’ Bryson Mayes fifth.

Not stopping there, Vanmarter, with a triple jump of 42’10”, edged the C-NS duo of Austen (42’2″) and Mayes (40’10”) as they swept the top three. The Northstars’ Marquis Banister made his way to second place, clearing 6 feet, as George Reader was fifth, with Liverpool’s Zach Harris and Nate Guarante fourth and sixth, respectively.

All of these athletes will be back at Bragman Stadium next Wednesday to duel with the likes of Fayetteville-Manlius in the Section III Class AA championship meet.
