A double win by senior Shaun Thompson, plus a title from fellow senior Andrew Hoover, helped highlight the Baldwinsville boys track and field team’s climb to fifth place in Wednesday’s Section III Class AA championship meet at Cicero-North Syracuse. Overall, the Bees earned 52 points, just ahead of Rome Free Academy (48 points) for that top-five position as the hosts from CNS accumulated 119.5 points to earn the top spot. Going to the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Thompson endured the high hurdles and water jumps to finish in front of the field with a time of nine minute, 38.39 seconds. No one else broke the 10-minute mark as CNS’s Anthony Lupia (10:07.96). Together, B’ville’s 4×800 relay team would roar past the field. Thompson, Ethan Pacheck, Andrew Fleming (who was sixth in the steeplechase) and Matt Pond combined for a time of 8:15.58 that beat the runner-up, Liverpool, by 2.8 seconds. Hoover had his big moment in the 400-meter hurdles, inching ahead by the stretch and winning in 57.50 seconds, with Corcoran’s Corey Graham (58.28 seconds) the runner-up. Hoover contended in the 110-meter high hurdles, settling into third place in 15.20 seconds. Pacheck, who was fifth in the 400-meter dash (52.03 seconds), and Pond would help Sean Maar and Alex Malecki as they took fourth in the 4×400 relay in 3:34.53. In the 4×100, Todd Mitchell, Antonio Peck, Parker Kiff and Alex Nagy were fourth in 44.78 seconds. Shawn Calnan cleared 5 feet 10 inches to finish fourth in the high jump. On his own, Mitchell got to fifth in the 200-meter dash in 23.06 seconds and was eighth (11.59 seconds) in the 100-meter dash, with Mark Stanard seventh in the discus (121 feet 8 inches) and Alec Peinkofer 10th in the mile (4:33.34).
