Having gone through enough ups and downs so far in 2010, the Baldwinsville baseball team found time for more extremes.
The Bees stumbled early in last Monday’s game against Corcoran, but recovered in a big way to roll past the Cougars 10-3.
Once he got out of a first inning where Corcoran scored three times, B’ville pitcher Mike St. John dominated, combining with reliever Scott Redmond to hold the Cougars to six total hits.
Still, the Bees trailed until the bottom of the fourth, when it took out Corcoran pitcher Conor Nolan and didn’t stop until nine runs had crossed the plate.
Gabe Levanti’s tear continued. Fresh off the first cycle in program history against Henninger on April 30, Levanti tripled and finished with three RBIs, while Dan Dubiel went deep for a home run and also got three RBIs. Brett Charboneau drove in a run, as Dubiel and Kyle Lattanzio scored twice.
Things completely reversed itself on Tuesday, when the Bees went to Falcon Park and lost to Auburn in a 10-1 decision.
What was supposed to be a duel between Bo Watson and Maroons ace Steve Komanecky never materialized. Instead, Watson was gone in the second inning after Auburn plated five runs in the first off two hits and four walks.
Terry Engels relived Watson and contained things for a while, but the Maroons put things away with four more runs in the fourth, including Timmy Smith’s solo home run as he, along with Mike Ferlenda, led Auburn with three RBIs apiece.
As the Maroons got 15 hits off Watson, Engels, Redmond and Nick Riley, B’ville did little hitting of its own, as Komanecky blanked them in six innings of one-hit ball, striking out five. The Bees’ lone run came in the seventh, when Brett Earle doubled and came home on Brandyn Peters’ sacrifice fly.
In cold and windy conditions Thursday, the Bees hosted Central Square — and again, things completely turned around, as the Bees beat the Red Hawks by the same 10-1 margin by which it lost to Auburn.
Kyle Cushman pitched most of the way, earning the win by combining with Watson to limit Central Square to six hits and a sixth-inning run.
That tally came after B’ville assumed a 7-0 lead, helped by five Red Hawks errors. Lattanzio earned a triple, while Dubiel doubled and joined Levanti, Watson and Torre Holtman with single RBIs. Connor Martin drove in two runs.
In between games against Nottingham and Rochester McQuaid next week, the Bees (9-6, 4-5 league) will have a big Thursday showdown with Liverpool.
