As the Section III indoor track and field season got underway, both the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool teams went to a new venue — SUNY-Cortland — for last Saturday’s Jack Morse Relays. In these unfamiliar surroundings, the Northstars would shine, winning both sides of the afternoon session. CNS had 74 points to Liverpool’s 44 in the girls meet, and the CNS boys also had 74 points to prevail as the Warriors tied Mexico for second place with 38 points. On the boys side, CNS claimed the 4×200 relay as Michael Hyde, Shayne Mitchell, Chris Poniros and Dillon McKee posted a time of 1:45.76, with Phoenix (1:46.62) in second place. In the distance medley relay, Jared Walther, Alex Bottorff, Ryan Connor and Chris Buchanan won in 11:09.86, and the streak continued in the 4×800 as Ken Ryan, Mike Kavanagh, Steve Rathbun and Anthony Lupia prevailed in 9:19.53. Walther, Buchanan, Connor and Keenan Williams won the 1,600 sprint medley in 3:53.62. CNS also won the long jump (combined leaps of 33 feet 2 inches) and pole vault (combined clearance of 11 feet), while also taking second in the high jump and third in the shot put. Liverpool won the 55-meter hurdles (18.29 seconds) and shot put (77 feet 3/4 inch) events. Meanwhile, in the girls meet, the Northstars came out on top in four different relay races, a dominance similar to the boys side, in addition to a 55-meter hurdles title in 18.55 seconds. Jamie Ryan, Marissa Colburn, Nicole Campagna and Marie Lamontagne teamed up to take the 4×400 relay in a clocking of 4:21.47. Katie Laris joined Campagna, Colburn and Lamontagne as the Northstars claimed the distance medley relay in 11:09.86. Over in the 4×200, Ryan resurfaced with Laura Tolbert, Katie Osborne and Brittany Murphy for a victory in 1:59.15. Finally, Jamie Leone, Dana Rinaldi, Jacqulyn Halstead and Schuyler Cary worked together to win the 4×800 relay in 10:51.69. In response, Liverpool won the high jump with combined clearances of 9 feet 5 inches, one inch ahead of CNS, though the Northstars answered by taking the shot put (64 feet 8 inches) as the Warriors finished third.
