At last, the Jamesville-DeWitt boys lacrosse team made an appearance in the state Class B rankings, grabbing the no. 13 spot — then backing it up with some more wins. The key effort came last Thursday night, against New Hartford, as the Red Rams steadily wore the Spartans down and won by a comfortable 14-6 margin. Though New Hartford came in with a 9-2 record, J-D did not get worried, instead answering the challenge with a fine all-around effort. J-D solved New Hartford’s zone defense in a hurry, not letting up until it had an 8-3 halftime edge, something the Spartans could not eat into during the second half. Jake Bratek, with four goals, and Cam Stone, with three goals and one assist, led the way. Joe Shepard and Eric DeJohn each found the net twice, with Jeff Sciera adding a goal and two assists. Colin Short and Mac Keehfus also scored, as Keehfus added an assist. The Red Rams nearly shut out Fulton last Tuesday night, but did whatever it wanted in an 18-1 romp over the Red Raiders. J-D peaked in the second quarter with eight unanswered goals, enough to build up a 12-0 edge and get everybody on the roster some playing time. Eric DeJohn, Jake Bratek and Joe Shepard each had three-goal hat tricks, with DeJohn adding two assists and Cam Stone gaining three assists. Colin Short had two goals and two assists, with Mac Keehfus getting two goals and one assist. Rob Elbers and Tim Edwards each had one goal and one assist as Matt Kopp, Rob Wengert and Ed Kiesa also scored. As the Red Rams continued to roll, East Syracuse-Minoa stumbled at Whitesboro Thursday night, falling to the Warriors 6-5. The Spartans paid for getting shut out in the first half, even though Whitesboro could only manage a 2-0 halftime edge. Mike Cummings, with three goals and one assist, led ESM’s comeback, while James Chayka got a goal and two assists and Garrett Smith also scored. A.J. DeSimone (two goals) and Kevin Flanagan (one goal, three assists) led Whitesboro along as its goalie, Dave Olney, had 13 saves, one more than Spartan goalie Matt Letcher.
