On the one hand, the Skaneateles boys lacrosse team enters 2010 with a roster featuring more juniors than seniors, creating the assumption that its youth might hinder a quest to regain the Section III Class C title after LaFayette took it from them one season ago. Yet on the other hand, those juniors — and seniors — are really good, and have all the qualities necessary to make a championship run. Impressing the home crowd on a cold, wet Tuesday night, the Lakers relied on a high-powered attack to take down its neighbors from Auburn in a 19-10 romp. In any opening game, the main concern is how sharp or sloppy a team might be. The Lakers clearly fit into the first category as it unleashed one of its best offensive efforts in recent memory. Skaneateles bolted out to a 7-1 lead by the early portion of the second quarter, clicking in every phase of the game. In one particular sequence, Zach Brownlee forced a turnover, picked up the ground ball, then passed to Paul O’Donnell at full speed. In one motion, O’Donnell passed it to Kelly Donigan near the net –and Donigan scored easily. Auburn did try to fight back, cutting the margin to 8-5 in the third quarter. All that seemed to do, though, was inspire the Lakers to a higher gear. O’Donnell used a behind-the-back goal to inspire an 11-1 outburst that covered most of the second half. Auburn didn’t reach double digits on the board until the late stages, when the starters had long since gone to the bench. Overall, Donigan, with five goals and two assists, and Kevin Rice, with four goals and two assists, led the furious charge. O’Donnell scored twice, adding a pair of assists, while Mike Richards also had two goals. Dylan Ross and Tom Schoener each picked up one goal and one assist as Brownlee, Zach Ross and Jeff Higman also converted. Auburn saw Andrew Chadderdon get four goals and one assist and Connor Entenmann pick up three goals and one assist. Two nights later, Skaneateles got a chance to show off again as it faced its namesakes from Cazenovia. Once again, it would win the battle of Laker teams, fighting its way to an 11-7 win. Remembering that it lost to Skaneateles 10-2 in last year’s Class C semifinal, Cazenovia sought some small payback, but could not do much in the first half as the hosts won most of the face-offs and steadily gained a 7-1 margin by the break. That domination would not continue in the second half, but Skaneateles still had enough to prevail as Donigan poured in four goals and Rice gained three goals and one assist. Baier, Richards, Schoener and Dylan Ross also took turns gaining goals, with O’Donell adding an assist. Cazenovia’s Brett Axelson scored four times, but most of those came in the late going as Cal Winkleman had most of the fun early on his way to 15 saves. With a 2-0 mark, Skaneateles visited Christian Brothers Academy on Tuesday, then will be off for a week before hosting Westhill on April 13.
