For the most part, the West Genesee baseball team has behaved quite well, piling up wins and establishing its Section III Class AA contending credentials. But the Wildcats’ first real letdown of the season threatened that status, as a huge lead got away at home last Tuesday in a 9-8 loss to Corcoran. Pete Woytowich, fresh off an impressive win at Rome Free Academy on April 24, breezed through the first four innings against the Cougars as his teammates built a 6-0 lead, taking advantage of Corcoran’s five errors. But in the top of the fifth, Corcoran knocked Woytowich from the game and picked up seven runs, with Steve Boronczyk (three RBIs) and Jake Donegan (two RBIs) inflicting most of the damage. WG answered with two runs in its half of the fifth to reclaim the lead 8-7, but reliever Shawn Schlitz could not hold on. Corcoran scored twice in the top of the seventh as Donegan’s hit tied it and Anthony Perry’s sacrifice fly led to the game-winner. Despite the bad defense around him, Boronczyk went the full seven innings and only allowed four Wildcat hits. In defeat, Mark Scholz and Pete Woytan each had two RBis, with Woytowich also driving in a run. Exactly 24 hours later, when WG visited Corcoran, it proved completely different as the Wildcats rampaged at the plate and ripped the Cougars 15-1. WG erupted for six runs in the first inning, then kept relatively quiet until an eight-run seventh inning made it a bit more lopsided. Woytowich constantly hurt the Corcoran pitchers, smacking a home run and finishing with a season-best five RBIs. Overall, WG had 16 hits, including Brian Burns’ triple as he and Spencer both drove in two runs. Kevin Petrick, Jake Fietkiewicz, Adam Bishop and Josh Cruz earned one RBI apiece. Burns also pitched in relief of Turner Parry, who got the win. Before all this, the Wildcats received a stern challenge from Henninger, but did enough to beat the Black Knights 7-5. Henninger actually had more hits — nine, compared to WG’s seven. And the two sides exchanged runs in the early going, with the Wildcats needing a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to build the margin to 7-3. Though Henninger cut the lead in half in the late going, WG held on as Spencer got the win on the mound and Bishop Earned the save. Bishop also drove in a run as Erik Krohl, Greg Wadach, Scholz and Petrick earned one RBI apiece. At the end of this long and busy week, WG had a long and exciting battle with Utica-Notre Dame on Saturday, falling to the Jugglers 9-8 in nine innings. Twice, WG led, at 3-0 and 5-4. Both times, UND came back, and carried an 8-5 advantage to the bottom of the seventh, where the Wildcats kept itself alive with a stirring three-run rally. But in the top of the ninth, the Jugglers’ John King belted a triple off Dan Connor, then came home on Pat Moore’s single. UND reliever Nick Vella blanked the Wildcats in the bottom of the ninth to end it. WG stayed in it despite getting out-hit, 16-7. Bishop doubled and drove in a run, as Spencer produced two RBIs. Wadach and Scholz also drove in runs. All this, plus a win over Fayetteville-Manlius on April 25, left the Wildcats at 10-5 going into Tuesday’s big trip to Liverpool, which precedes home dates with Nottingham and Oswego.
