ARISE is delighted to be joining with Syracuse Stage to display a selection of the work featured in ARISE’s 2017 UNIQUE Art & Literary magazine. A selection of 10 pieces will be on display during Syracuse Stage’s run of “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” (Oct. 25th through Nov. 12).
Every year, ARISE invites people with disabilities to submit visual and literary art. Submissions are received from people throughout the region and an editorial board selects which pieces are included in the publication. This year’s edition of the magazine debuted in August and features 58 original pieces by artists ranging in age from 15 to 87.
The play “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” which is based on the novel of the same name, centers around a boy named Christopher who is on the autism spectrum and is suspected of murdering his neighbor’s dog. The actor playing the role of Christopher, Mickey Rowe, is on the autism spectrum himself. The selection of art from UNIQUE that will be on display has all been done by artists in Central New York who are also on the autism spectrum. The pieces have been created in a variety of media including painting, photography, digital, literature and more.
“The opportunity to partner with Syracuse Stage is incredibly exciting, especially for this show,” says Katie Hanlon, development and communications associate at ARISE. “We are proud that these impressive works done by local artists on the autism spectrum will be displayed in conjunction with a show that ignites a conversation about different abilities. At ARISE, we believe everyone should be able to live as independent a life as they choose, and that includes the opportunity to create art. And we are delighted that people who come to see the show will realize the gifts that people of all abilities have to share.”
Syracuse Stage has been committed to making the theater as accessible as possible, from ASL interpreted and audio descripted shows, to open captioning and sensory-friendly performances. The theater is wheelchair accessible and they recently completed construction on making their restrooms fully accessible. The show runs Oct. 25 through Nov. 12 and tickets can be purchased online at syracusestage.org or by calling the box office at (315) 443-3275.
