Francis House Auxiliary Silver Sunday Tea and Open House takes place Sept. 17
From 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, Dr. Robert and Maria Dracker will open their home, located at 7717 Summerwood Place, Liverpool, to the public for the annual Auxiliary of Francis House Silver Sunday. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the creation of the auxiliary.
Founded in 1991 by Sister Kathleen Osbelt with the Sisters of St. Francis, this ministry continues its mission to provide a home and an extended family to persons with terminal illnesses so they can die with dignity surrounded by the unconditional love of God. This mission is carried out in two eight-bedroom homes located on Michaels Avenue on Syracuse’s north side. Over 2,500 people have lived their final days at Francis House.
In 1992, the Auxiliary of Francis House was formed to raise awareness and support of the ministry. That year, the auxiliary held its very first Silver Tea at the Skaneateles home of Laurence Ruston. Over the years, the event has raised over $140,000 for Francis House.
The Drackers hosted the Tea in 2004, and are thrilled to again be hosts for this very special year.
“Francis House is more than a house,” they said. “It’s a home that is there for our entire community and it represents love, comfort and peace. It is an honor to support such a special place.”
There are a few changes to this year’s Silver Tea. The usual mid-week event date is moved to Sunday.
“We hope this enables those who cannot take time from work, school or family obligations during the week a chance to attend.” says Silver Sunday Co-Chair Cathy Haley.
Refreshments will be provided. The event will also include a wine tasting provided by Owera Vineyards, owned by the Muserlian family, long-time Francis House supporters. There will be a raffle for a Harvey Ellis Rocker donated by Stickley, Audi & Company and a silver and diamond bracelet donated by Diana Jewelers. Tickets are $5 each, 5 tickets for $20.
The public is invited and any donation at the event is graciously accepted. Street parking is available. Those needing assistance may be dropped off at the door.
“We are grateful to the Drackers for opening their beautiful home,” said Silver Sunday Co-Chair Patte DeStaffan. “It is a perfect way to celebrate home while bringing the community together to support this special ministry.”
