CENTRAL NEW YORK – It took several days for things to dry up and warm up enough for a full slate of area high school golf matches – at least for most of the local boys and girls sides.
In boys golf, Marcellus played twice last week and won both contests with ease, starting Thursday when it faced Manlius Pebble Hill and bashed the Trojans 227-307.
Amid a top-five individual sweep, Elliot Austin shot a 41 at Sunset Ridge, beating out the 42 from Will Glass. Ben Reome put up a 46 as Pat Louer and Landon Kelly both finished with 49.
A day later, the Mustangs routed Altmar-Parish-Williamstown 216-331 at Sunset Ridge, Glass nearly matching part with a 37 as John Williams was second with a 43. Austin and Kelly both shot 45 and Reome had a 46.
Back on Monday, Bishop Ludden had its boys team win its season opener 226-254 over MPH, the Gaelic Knights led by a 43 from Max Boyea.
Just behind him, Phil McGarvey and Steve Hall both posted 44 to beat out the 46 from the Troians’ James Wildhack. Aiden Glennon picked up a 47 and Nick Brunger added a 48.
There were still good girls matches last Tuesday afternoon, including one where 5-1 Marcellus challenged unbeaten Christian Brothers Academy at Tuscarora and took a 201-219 defeat to the Brothers.
Over nine holes, Allison Coombs shot a 47 to lead all individuals. Yet CBA got a 48 from Grace Catalano and 49s from Anna Fuller and Cara DeFillipis that beat the Mustangs’ next best rounds, Claire Curtin getting a 56 ahead of Isabella Formoza (57) and Sofia Tufenkjian (59).
In Thursday’s 231-250 win over Cazenovia, Coombs’ 49 at Tuscarora was four better than the 53 from the Lakers’ Claire Marris. Tufenkjian was third with a 59, with Curtin fourth at 61 and Formoza fifth thanks to a 62.
Coombs then shot a 41 in Friday’s 198-258 win over Bishop Grimes that got the Mustangs to 7-2 overall. Tufenkjian again played well, posting a 46, with Genevieve Formoza’s 55 beating Isabelle Formoza’s 56.
Westhill pulled out a 246-247 decision over Manlius Pebble Hill because the combined efforts of Samantha Burkett (58), Elizabeth Polcaro (60), Annabella Cecile (62) and Lia McQuenney (66) overcame a 42 by the Trojans’ Amitees Fazeli as no other MPH golfer topped 62.
But when it ran into CBA on Friday, Westhill lost 182-257 at Camillus Golf Club, Brukett and Charlotte Roth both shooting 58, well back of the 42 from Catalano that led the Brothers.
Skaneateles won, too, holding off Bishop Grimes 251-262, though Ella Arroyo’s 59 was second among individuals behind the Cobras’ Ashley Ince, who had a 50.
By that exact same 251-262 score on Thursday afternoon, the Lakers prevailed over Chitteanngo, and Arroyo again finished with a 59 as Skaneateles improved to 3-4 overall.
West Genesee absorbed a 178-234 defeat to Cicero-North Syracuse Blue last Thursday at Lakeshore Country Club as Sophia Simiele shot a 58, ahead of Olivia Snyder (58), Allison Lamberton (60) and Allison Shortslef (62). Isabella Borte led a top-four Northstars sweep with a 40.
