LIVERPOOL – About the best way the Baldwinsville cross country teams could follow up its successful hosting of its 70th annual invitational meet on Sept. 24 was beating a big rival a few days later.
That’s exactly what the Bees did as, led by race winners Solomon Holden-Betts and Kamryn Barton, the Bees managed to sweep Liverpool Wednesday afternoon at the Warriors’ home course at Long Branch Park.
The boys race would go back and forth, but B’ville took its 27-29 by taking four of the top seven spots led, of course, by Holden-Betts, who in 16 minutes, 50.1 seconds pulled away from Liverpool’s Austin Ziegler (17:29.0) in second place.
Noah Covert, in 17:37.7, pulled away from Michael Purvis (17:55.9) for third place, while the battle for fifth had Jeff Ragonese, in 18:18.5, edge Jacob Makhlouf’s 18:22.8.
Just behind them, the Bees’ Jack McAllister was seventh in 18:22.8, and though Brady Ruediger (18:24.1), Josh Vang (18:24.6) and J.T. Goss (18:39.8) rounded out the top 10, the Bees clinched the team win when Ryan Wilson finished 11th in 18:48.3 as Jacob Guelli (18:55.2) and Kyle Sheckler (19:00.6) followed.
The girls race would finish 26-31 in B’ville’s favor, with Barton leading the way as the freshman sensation covered the Long Branch course in 20:44.5, pulling away from Liverpool’s Meghan Moyer, who got second in 21:11.3.
After Addison Ziegler (21:48.3) finished third, the next three spots went to the Bees as Sophia Cavalieri got fourth place in 22:01.5, Yolanda Wei was fifth in 22:16.3 and Mary Sabatino went 22:32 flat for sixth place.
This allowed B’ville to absorb finishes from Kaitlin Hotaling (seventh, 23:02.3) and Page Baker (23:05.3) as Clare Horan clinched the Bees’ win when she took ninth in 23:27.8. Margaret Solomon (23:37.4) beat out Brianna Grosso (23:51.2) for 11th place.
Now both B’ville sides would get ready to host Fayetteville-Manlius and Cicero-North Syracuse for a grand meet next Wednesday before heading to the Oct. 8 Manhattan Invitational in New York City.
