CBA swimmers defeat Jamesville-DeWitt, 105-81

Brothers win first two meets; F-M handles Baldwinsville

ONONDAGA COUNTY – Trying to maintain its recent dominance of the area large-school ranks, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls swim team would do while still traveling to Cazenovia College for most of its home meets.

Jamesville-DeWitt does have a home pool, and would use it to host Christian Brothers Academy last Friday night. Led by Ella Zaryski, the Brothers put together a 105-81 victory over the Red Rams.

Twice in individual events, Zaryski prevailed, going 26.43 seconds to claim the 50-yard freestyle and then tearing to first place in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.80 ahead of Sofia Ciereck’s second-place 1:10.15.

Zaryski and Ciereck helped Claire Krueger and Jenna Filhan get a victory in the first race of the night, taking the 200 medley relay in 2:02.78 to J-D’s 2:05.66.

Filhan, in 1:08.46, held off the Rams’ Olivia Ogata (1:10.26) in the 100 butterfly, while Krueger earned first place in the 100 freestyle in 1:00.65 to the 1:02.48 from the Rams’ Margaret Lister.

On J-D’s side, Shearyn Wales twice got ahead of CBA’s Anna Fuller, first by swimming the 200 freestyle in 2:10.95 to Fuller’s 2:16.96, and then drawing away to win the 500 freestyle in 5:49.61.

Also winning twice for the Rams, Gwen Lister swam the 200 individual medley in 2:21.26 as Filhan finished second and adding a 100 breaststroke victory in 1:11.26 to Krueger’s 1:16.14.

Kayla McQuaid won diving for J-D with 217.85 points. Wales, Ogata and the Lister sisters were first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:50.48, but CBA ended the meet with Zaryski, Fuller, Josie Lachut and Zoe Thayer taking the 400 freestyle relay in 4:14.38.

A week earlier, on Sept. 1, J-D had defeated Syracuse City 72-62 at Nottingham High School, led by Caroline Skahen, who was first in the 100 freestyle in 32.64 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 1:11.81.

Other titles went to Nora Barnello in the 200 freestyle (2:22.95) and Emma Paul (100 butterfly, 1:26.38), with McQuaid picking up 215.25 points to dominate the diving competition. Gwen Lister swam the 100 backstroke in 1:08.27 and Margaret Lister took the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.30.

CBA had started its season last Tuesday night, taking on Syracuse City, which has combined its team with Westhill. The Brothers prevailed by a score of 92-66.

Madison Cecilia went 2:23.03 in the 200 freestyle and 1:19.16 in the 100 breaststroke. Fuller took the 50 freestyle in 28.12 seconds, edging Lachut’s 28.88 beore Lachut was first in the 100 butterfly in 1:15 flat.

Thayer took first in the 100 freestyle in 1:02.28, with Krueger topping the field in the 500 freestyle in 6:21.98 as Alaia Nizar beat the field in the 100 backstroke in 1:17.58.

In its season opener the same Friday CBA met J-D, F-M faced Baldwinsville and, with its usual array of depth and talent, was able to defeat the Bees 100-72.

Georgia Langan returns for F-M and, in the sprints, got times of 25.61 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 57.39 seconds in the 100 freestyle, winning both events.

Elise Wratney, who swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.19, took first in the 200 individual medley in 2:19.91 after Samanatha Roddy went 2:14.28 in the 200 freestyle. Cecilia Cao beat the field in the 100 butterfly in 1:07.11.

Gabby Dardis posted 1:07.68 in the 100 backstroke after helping Eliza Smith, Kelly Liu and Lily Fowler go 2:07.68 in the 200 medley relay. Langan, Fowler, Jule Voelk and Grace Reyna went 1:53.96 in the 200 freestyle relay.
