ONEIDA – For a long time, the Cicero-North Syracuse Blue girls golf team had to watch as other sides, especially Fayetteville-Manlius, claimed the majority of Section III honors.
But when Tuesday’s sectional tournament was held at Kanon Valley Country Club, it was the Northstars winning the large-school championship by a margin of just six strokes over F-M’s Green team.
These two sides had split their regular-season meetings, each one winning at home. So it was little surprise that their post-season battle would also prove a close one.
Leading the way for C-NS Blue, Jessica Ricciardi shot an 89, which tied her for fourth place among individuals, not far from the winning 86 from Watertown’s Jillian Draper.
Then Isabella Borte picked up a 99 to tie for 14th place and two eighth-graders – Chloe Tice and Andrea Wheaton – closely followed, Tice shooting a 104 and Wheaton adding a 107.
That was enough to put up a team total of 399, which beat F-M Green’s total of 405. Gabby Dardis, Bella Fullmer and Heirot Miller each shot 101 for the Hornets as Alana Isley picked up a 102. Gabby DiOrio had a 112 and Mackenzie Wessels shot 123 and Ava Mazzoli a 126. C-NS Green’s Lindsey Kubala had a 124.
Liverpool finished with a team score of 454 as Madelyn Turck led the Warriors, posting a 102 to tie Isley for 24th place. Jewelyana Daniels added a 107, Emma Fenwick shot 119 and Ella Foriero finished at 126.
C-NS Blue will go to Wilton’s McGregor Links this weekend to take part in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships.
