CENTRAL NEW YORK – In both of their encounters this spring, the Jamesville-DeWitt softball team found lots of success scoring runs against its neighbors from East Syracuse Minoa.
It happened again last Tuesday afternoon, the state Class A no. 19-ranked Red Rams rolling past the Spartans 18-3 in a steady, relentless display.
J-D put up multiple runs in six consecutive innings, peaking with a five-run second, and earned 20 hits overall as Emma White doubled three times and drove in five runs, while Emily Bulone went four-for-four, with two doubles and three RBIs.
Kate Dorazio and Amanda Aitken both drove in two runs, with Kaira McMahon, Miriam Zoghby and Sophia Zoghby earning two hits apiece. On ESM’s side, Natalie Quonce did have a double and two RBIs as Morgan Ransom drove in the other run to go with two hits.
Both teams played again on Wednesday – and both would win, J-D routing Rochester Mercy 16-1 and ESM handling Fulton 6-2.
Again the Red Rams’ bats were in top form against Mercy, building a 6-1 margin and then closing it out with a 10-run outburst in the bottom of the fourth.
Bulone slugged a home run, added three doubles and finished with six RBIs. Dorazio and White each got three hits as White, Kayla McQuaid and Sophia Zoghby drove in two runs apiece. Bulone and Dorazio both scored three runs.
In ESM’s case, five runs in the first three innings were enough for Olivia Goff, who amassed 15 strikeouts while limiting Fulton to five hits.
Ransom went three-for-four at the plate, doubling and singling twice while earning an RBI. Brefka impressed, too, going three-for-three with an RBI as Goff also drove in a run and Jaylianna Sabatino got a pair of hits.
Fayetteville-Manlius took a 4-2 defeat to Central Square last Tuesday afternoon, the Hornets only getting four hits, one each by Gracie Bishop, Megan Woodridge, Ella Keyes and Natalie Mayne as Lily Fowler got credit for an RBI. Natalie Bush drove in a pair of runs for the Redhawks.
In Wednesday’s 8-5 defeat to Cicero-North Syracuse, F-M got a trio of first-inning runs to move in front, but the Northstars countered with five runs in the bottom of the second and never got caught.
Paige Graves and Emily Howe still managed two hits apiece, with Keyes, Howe and Mayne driving in runs. Danielle Filapello led C-NS with three hits and two RBIs.
F-M lost, 7-4, to Liverpool on Saturday afternoon, even though it managed eight hits, two each by Bishop and Graves, who also drove in runs as Woodridge added an RBI. The Hornets would not advance to the Section III playoffs.
Christian Brothers Academy was overwhelmed last Tuesday in a 17-0 defeat to Chittenango, who would also pull off a 5-0 shutout of F-M two days later.
In the Class A sectional bracket, J-D has the top seed and ESM the no. 4 seed. If they win their respective quarterfinals – the Rams against Carthage or Indian River, the Spartans against New Hartford – they would meet in Saturday’s semifinal at Ray Middle School in Baldwinsville.
CBA, the no. 6 seed in Class A, would be home Tuesday to face no. 11 seed Watertown, hoping to advance to Thursday’s quarterfinal against no. 3 seed Camden.
